Leeds United defeat 10-man Middlesbrough

Leeds United beat the 10 men of Middlesbrough 2-1 in the Championship this afternoon.

Leeds United held off a strong challenge from the 10 men of Middlesbrough to win 2-1 at Elland Road this afternoon.

Ross McCormack, who scored four goals in Leeds's 4-2 victory over Charlton Athletic a fortnight ago, went close within the opening two minutes as they rushed out of the blocks.

Dexter Blackstock passed up a good chance to put the home side ahead in the 23rd minute when his effort flew over the bar from Lee Peltier's right-wing cross and Jason Steele made a sprawling save to deny Danny Pugh.

However, with 35 minutes of the clock, McCormack showed his predatory instincts to nod the ball home from three yards to give Leeds the advantage.

With half time approaching, Jason Steele was shown a straight red card for a foul on Blackstock, and McCormack sent the resulting free kick just wide of the post.

However, it was the 10 men of Boro who scored next, as Caryol Mustapha Carayol nipped in front of his marker to convert Albert Adomah's cross.

The lead lasted just five minutes, though, as Jason Pearce rose highest at the far post to head home Peltier's deep cross.

Blackstock and then Rudy Austin both went close as Leeds looked to put the game beyond the reach of the visitors.
