Jonjo Shelvey penalty seals draw for Swansea City

Swansea City come from a goal down to share a 1-1 draw with Everton at the Liberty Stadium in the Premier League.

A second-half penalty from Jonjo Shelvey has secured a 1-1 draw for Swansea City in their Premier League match with Everton at the Liberty Stadium.

Everton had the majority of the early possession, but it was Swansea who had the first chance of the match when Bafetimbi Gomis tried to lob the ball past Tim Howard from 25 yards out.

The keeper kept the ball out though, and the striker appeared to tweak his hamstring while unleashing the effort, forcing him off with just over quarter of an hour gone.

Everton tried to make the most of the change by going on the counter-attack, but a Ross Barkley ball in for Gareth Barry failed to find the midfielder.

Lukasz Fabianksi was forced to make a save shortly after when Seamus Coleman blasted the ball towards the Swansea goal from 25 yards out, but the keeper stretched wide to tip it behind.

Everton did break the deadlock just before the break though as James McCarthy crossed the ball in to Aaron Lennon, leaving the on-loan winger to slice it past Fabianski from close range.

There was a blow for the home side early in the second half as Neil Taylor picked up his 10th booking of the season, ruling him out of their next two matches.

Garry Monk's side soon started to pose more of a threat going forward though, with Marvin Emnes sending a rasping effort just wide of the post, before Ki Sung-yueng just missed from a tight angle after a quick run down the wing from Wayne Routledge.

Swansea wanted a penalty when Emnes took a tumble in the box under a challenge from Phil Jagielka, but referee Michael Oliver thought that the striker went down a little easily.

The hosts did have a spot kick three minutes later though as Coleman handled the ball while trying to stop a run from Emnes, allowing Jonjo Shelvey to convert from the spot, sending Howard the wrong way.

Swansea thought that they could win it late on when they had another set piece in a promising position, but Howard got his fingertips to Gylfi Sigurdsson's 25-yard drive.

Everton piled forward again as the match headed into stoppage time, but their pressure was not enough, leaving both sides with a point.

The result leaves Everton 12th in the table, while Swansea sit eighth.
