Preview: Newcastle United vs. Everton

Newcastle United vs. Everton

Everton will attempt to continue their outside pursuit of a Champions League position when they travel to Newcastle United on Tuesday evening.

The Toffees currently sit sixth in the Premier League table following a 3-2 win over Swansea City at the weekend, but face a Newcastle side that has won three of their last four in the league.

A late strike from Papiss Cisse handed the Magpies a 1-0 win over Crystal Palace on Saturday, with that result moving Alan Pardew's side into eighth, just five points behind current champions Manchester United.

Everton, meanwhile, have won their last three in the league and were 2-1 winners when they travelled to Newcastle in the corresponding match last season.

Roberto Martinez's side were also 3-2 winners when they welcomed Newcastle to Goodison Park earlier this season and have lost just one of their last five games against the Magpies.

The home side will still be without the services of injured forward Loic Remy, while regular full-backs Mathieu Debuchy and Davide Santon remain on the sidelines.

Pardew, who will once more hand his managerial duties to assistant John Carver, has no fresh injury concerns from the weekend and could select an unchanged XI. However, Shola Ameobi is pushing for a start alongside Cisse in attack.

Everton, meanwhile, are still without England international Phil Jagielka due to a hamstring injury.

Steven Pienaar is also unavailable in addition to long-term absentees Lacina Traore, Bryan Oviedo, Arouna Kone and Darron Gibson.

John Stones is expected to continue at the heart of the defence alongside Sylvain Distin, while on-loan Barcelona attacker Gerard Deulofeu is pushing for a start after featuring from the bench against Swansea.
