Owen: 'Faith lost in national team'

Former England striker Michael Owen has claimed that the country has lost belief in the national team.

The Three Lions went some way to erasing the disappointment of their World Cup campaign on Monday night with a 2-0 win over Switzerland in Euro 2016 qualifying.

However, ex-Liverpool and Manchester United forward Owen believes that fans are still being left uninspired by Roy Hodgson's side.

"Everyone in this room, the fans, us, we have all lost belief in the national team," the 34-year-old told delegates at the Soccerex Conference in Manchester. "I don't think we will get that back until we do something significant at a major tournament."

Owen scored 40 goals in 89 appearances for England during an international career that lasted from 1998 to 2008.
