Belgium assistant coach Marc Wilmots tells striker Romelu Lukaku that his place in the national team is under threat if he does not play more often at Chelsea.

Romelu Lukaku's place in the Belgian national team is under threat if he does not play more often at Chelsea, according to Belgium assistant coach Marc Wilmots.

The 18-year-old striker move to Stamford Bridge for a fee rising to £18m in August but so far this season he has only made six brief appearances in the Premier League under Andre Villas-Boas.

Lukaku was not even named as a substitute on Saturday, as the Blues beat Bolton Wanderers 3-0.

Wilmots told Inside Futbol: "Obviously if a player does not play for his club, it is difficult to select him for the national team because you need rhythm, games and confidence which, in September, will be crucial.

"The decision is his, but I advise him to find playing time.

"We support everyone, but if they don't play it becomes difficult for us to select them for the national team."

Belgium did not qualify for Euro 2012 and will begin their qualifying campaign to reach the 2014 World Cup in September.
