Chelsea injury news: Calum McFarlane delivers quadruple blow ahead of Liverpool showdown

McFarlane provides Chelsea injury update, Blues player ruled out for season

Interim head coach Calum McFarlane has revealed that Chelsea prospect Jesse Derry will miss the rest of the season.

The academy star was handed his first Premier League start on Monday as the Blues squared off against Nottingham Forest.

However, the 18-year-old was involved in a clash of heads with fellow youngster Zach Abbott shortly before half time, leading to him being stretchered off after several minutes of treatment.

Derry has since released a public statement to show his gratitude to those who assisted him, while McFarlane suggested after the fixture that the starlet had shown positive signs of recovery.

Nevertheless, speaking at a press conference on Thursday, McFarlane said that the teenager would not be involved for the remainder of 2025-26.

While not familiar with all of the details, McFarlane reiterated that the "early signs were positive" for a full recovery.

He told reporters: "I spoke to Jesse's dad the night it happened and the family yesterday. It's positive.

"I don't have the insights to go into massive details but the early signs are positive. As long as he's healthy, that's all that really matters. He's not going to be available between now and the end of the season."

Chelsea suffer further triple injury blow

Meanwhile, McFarlane revealed that goalkeeper Robert Sanchez would be sidelined with the head injury that he suffered against Forest.

Furthermore, Pedro Neto and Alejandro Garnacho are "unlikely" to return from the knocks that they suffered in the build-up to the previous fixture.

On a more positive note, McFarlane revealed that Levi Colwill and Reece James are in line to be available this weekend.

Colwill came through 45 minutes on his return from a serious knee injury on Monday, while James has continued to come through training unscathed after a recent hamstring injury.
