The home side got off to the perfect start in the game when they went ahead in the ninth minute through Almamy Toure as he fired an effort past Benoit Costil.

Leonardo Jardim's side doubled their advantage two minutes later as Brazilian midfielder Wallace found the net with a low strike to put them in command of the match.

However, the visitors got themselves back in the match in the 34th minute when Pedro Henrique reduced the deficit as he beat the outstretched hand of Maarten Stekelenberg.

In the second half, Monaco managed to establish control of the game once more, but they struggled to break through the stubborn Rennes backline.

However, their efforts finally paid off when they won a penalty in the 67th minute. Anthony Martial took the spot kick and made no mistake, firing the ball past Costil to put his side back in control.

Rennes tried to rally late in the game, but were unable to get a goal back as the home side booked their place in the last eight of the competition.
