Former Arsenal forward Ian Wright hails Matteo Guendouzi for the midfielder's performance against Manchester City on Sunday afternoon.

Former Arsenal forward Ian Wright has paid tribute to Matteo Guendouzi for the midfielder's performance against Manchester City in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon.

Guendouzi - a summer arrival from Lorient - played the full 90 minutes on his Gunners debut as Unai Emery's side suffered a 2-0 defeat to City at the Emirates Stadium.

Wright has said that the 19-year-old's willingness to take the ball during a difficult match for Arsenal showed his credentials.

"Another less obvious new boy impressed me in Arsenal's young midfielder Matteo Guendouzi, signed from the relative wilderness of Ligue 2 Lorient in France," Wright told The Sun.

"Yes, he found it tough going at times against City but what impressed me was his attitude and effervescence. It would have been easy to hide - let's face it, others in the Arsenal side did - but he was still demanding the ball, still showing and still battling to the end.

"Gunners fans left the Emirates desperately looking for positives after an opening loss and Guendouzi was the biggest one of all."

Arsenal are believed to have paid Lorient £7m to sign the France Under-20 international.
