Preview: Aberdeen vs. St Mirren - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Sunday's Scottish Premiership clash between Aberdeen and St Mirren, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Aberdeen and St Mirren face off at Pittodrie Stadium in the final game of their Scottish Premiership season on Sunday afternoon.

Neither side have anything left to play for though, with the hosts finally confirming their survival in recent weeks and the visitors finishing the campaign strongly to round off another successful year.

Aberdeen will be glad to see the back of a disappointing 2021-22 campaign when it comes to an end on Sunday.

The Dons have endured countless setbacks during the year, with a particularly poor calendar year so far resulting in them unexpectedly competing in the bottom half when the division split last month.

Just two league wins have been recorded since the turn of the year - both of which have arrived on home soil at Pittodrie - with an awful record on the road contributing to Jim Goodwin's side narrowly avoiding a catastrophic drop out of the top flight.

The latest setback on the road came at St Johnstone on Tuesday evening, in which Callum Hendry netted the only goal of the game in the early stages to provide the Saints with a 1-0 victory in a tight and scrappy affair.

Goodwin will be out to record all three points against his former side when they visit on Sunday though, in a bid to end an awful campaign on a high note of some kind ahead of a summer of change in the coming months.

Meanwhile, after initially struggling following the departure of Goodwin to their opponents on Sunday, St Mirren have recovered from a five-match losing streak in all competitions to finish impressively.

Back-to-back wins over St Johnstone and Dundee were followed by a goalless draw against Livingston in midweek, meaning the Buddies head into the final day on the back of three successive clean sheets.

The recent recovery has seen Steve Robinson's side move away from danger and ensure another solid finish will be recorded in the Scottish Premiership.

Sunday's visitors could well drop two places with defeat at Pittodrie, but if Robinson's side can avoid defeat for a fourth consecutive outing, an impressive eighth-placed finish could well be theirs.

Much like Goodwin, St Mirren will be eager to get one over their former boss at the weekend when they face off against the 40-year-old for the first time since his departure in February.

Team News

Aberdeen's Christian Ramirez celebrates scoring their first goal on February 9, 2022© Reuters

Aberdeen's Christian Ramirez remains unavailable for the final day due to personal reasons, with the 32-year-old also being left out in midweek.

Calvin Ramsay and Ross McCrorie are also ruled out for the visit of St Mirren, whilst Michael Devlin remains a doubt due to an ankle injury.

The availability of Jonny Hayes also remains to be seen, with the versatile wide man lasting just 18 minutes at St Johnstone on Tuesday having initially come off the bench, but Marley Watkins looks set to return from a short absence and should replace Michael Ruth in attack.

As for the visitors, Ryan Flynn was forced off late on against Livingston on Tuesday, so the returning Richard Tait should slot back into the right wing-back role immediately.

Charles Dunne looks to be the only expected absentee, with the defender labelled as a doubt once more due to a foot injury.

With St Mirren heading into this game on the back of a solid run, Robinson is unlikely to tinker his consistent starting 11, other than the expected enforced change between Flynn and Tait.

Aberdeen possible starting lineup:
Lewis; Ojo, Gallagher, Bates, Mackenzie; Barron, Ferguson; Besuijen, Polvara, Montgomery; Watkins

St Mirren possible starting lineup:
Alnwick; Fraser, Shaughnessy, McCarthy; Tait, Gogic, Erhahon, Tanser; Kiltie; Main, Greive

We say: Aberdeen 1-1 St Mirren

The differing forms heading into this game mean that we do not see Aberdeen coming away with a relatively comfortable victory, as most would expect.

St Mirren will be a tough unit to break down, as their opponents have found in recent weeks, and despite the hosts being a much stronger side at home, the visitors are a difficult outfit to play against on their travels, and so we can see them coming away with a point on Sunday.
