Wycombe Wanderers win FA Cup battle with Barnet

Wycombe Wanderers book their place in the FA Cup second round with a 3-1 victory over Barnet.

League Two's top team Wycombe Wanderers edged out Conference leaders Barnet in a closely fought FA Cup tie at the Hive Stadium this afternoon.

The Conference side were ahead when John Akinde, who had two previous spells on loan with Wycombe Wanderers, beat the offside trap before rounding Matt Ingram and slotting home to give Barnet the lead on three minutes.

Returning skipper Charlie MacDonald then had a shout for a penalty after his shot appeared to hit a hand, but the referee waved away the appeals.

Wycombe drew level just after the half-hour mark when Paul Hayes scored from the penalty spot after Matt McClure had been fouled in the box.

Barnet were reduced to ten men on the stroke of half time when former Wycombe man Sam Togwell was sent off for a challenge on Matt Bloomfield.

Max Kretzschmar's effort was tipped over by Graham Stack five minutes after the restart, before Aaron Pierre headed home a Joe Jacobson corner on 59 minutes to put Wycombe ahead.

Gareth Ainsworth's side then made sure of their place in the next round when Sam Wood tapped home to seal the win 15 minutes from time before Barnet had Andy Yiadom sent off in the last minute.
