O'Neil talks up magnitude of Wolves win over Burnley

Wolverhampton Wanderers head coach Gary O'Neil has talked up the magnitude of his side's 1-0 victory over Burnley on Tuesday evening.

While the West Midlands outfit have received plenty of praise this season, back-to-back defeats to Fulham and Arsenal had left them on the back foot.

However, Wolves were able to respond against the Clarets as an Hwang Hee-chan effort just before half time earned them an important three points.

Had Burnley been able to prevail at Molineux, the 19th-placed visitors would have moved to within five points of Wolves, who are not regarded as relegation candidates.

Instead, Burnley remain two points adrift of safety at a time when Wolves have progressed up to 12th position in the standings, 11 points above the bottom three.

Speaking to Match of the Day after the game, O'Neil was quick to praise his side, who were playing a team outside of last season's top eight at home for the first time in 2023-24.

The Englishman said: "It went pretty much how I expected it to go. I hoped we could create more and be more fluid but Burnley are organised defensively and it is not easy to play through it.

"Really pleased with the performance, it is a big win. Burnley are a good side and they will be a test for many teams in this league.

"We were somewhere caught between having really good control of the game and then feeling we were not really a threat. We need to get more balls in behind, but Burnley are a good side.

"I said to the lads after it is a big win. The group stuck together and kept a clean sheet and it never looked in doubt really once we went in front."

Wolves have now gone five matches unbeaten at Molineux ahead of playing host to Nottingham Forest on Saturday afternoon.
