Daniel Podence scores the only goal of the game as Wolverhampton Wanderers pick up their first win of the new Premier League season at Southampton's expense.

Daniel Podence scored the only goal of the game as Wolverhampton Wanderers picked up their first Premier League win of the season against Southampton this afternoon.

The 26-year-old bundled the ball home from close range at the end of the first half for what proved to be the winner as Wolves climbed out of the bottom three.

Southampton had their moments in the contest, with Che Adams seeing a goal disallowed and also hitting the crossbar when in search of an equaliser, but Ralph Hasenhuttl's side were ultimately unable to back up their victory over Chelsea last time out.

Both sides struggled to create too many clear chances during a scrappy affair, and for much of the first half it looked as though Wolves' struggles in front of goal would be their undoing once again, despite the inclusion of new signing Sasa Kalajdzic.

Podence's finish was an untidy one after meeting Matheus Nunes's low cross, although he did manage to steer the ball over the line - something Adams failed to do when he should have.

The Southampton striker looked set for a simple finish from close range, but nodded the ball against his own arm, leaving the referee no choice but to award a free kick.

It was a much cleaner connection which saw him hit the woodwork not long after that, but Wolves held on for their first league win since April 2, leaving them on six points from as many games this season.

Southampton, meanwhile, drop into the bottom half of the table, now just one point above their conquerors this afternoon.
