Gary Caldwell: 'I can keep Wigan Athletic up'

New Wigan Athletic boss Gary Caldwell believes that he can guide the Latics to Championship safety, having played in the club's Premier League great escape campaign in 2012.

New Wigan Athletic manager Gary Caldwell has insisted that he can beat the odds and guide the club to Championship survival.

The Latics, who are eight points adrift of safety with five games remaining, appointed the 32-year-old on Wednesday following the departure of Malky Mackay.

Former Scotland defender Caldwell says that he will take inspiration from Wigan's Premier League great escape in 2012, when he was part of a Latics side that won seven of their last nine matches to stay up after being bottom of the table.

"Having played here in the great survivals of the Premier League era I believe that nothing's impossible," he told the Daily Star.

"There were times when we were down and out. I think of the run we went on when we beat Liverpool, Manchester United, Arsenal. They are things that at the time seemed like miracles. It can happen and we still believe it can."

Caldwell made 111 appearances for Wigan before retiring earlier this season due to a hip injury.
