Uwe Rosler defends Callum McManaman over 'diving' in Huddersfield Town draw

Rosler defends McManaman over 'diving'

Uwe Rosler has slammed referee Sebastian Stockbridge for his performance in Wigan Athletic's stalemate with Huddersfield Town in the Championship on Tuesday.

The Latics manager felt that his side should have had 'two clear penalties' in the 0-0 draw in Yorkshire, which represented Chris Powell's first point as Terriers boss.

Rosler was particularly critical of Stockbridge for his decision to book Callum McManaman for simulation following one of Wigan's penalty shouts, and feels that the Scot is being unjustly punished for having a false reputation as a diver.

He told reporters: "Three penalty situations tonight - two of them were clear penalties. We didn't get what we deserved. The [McManaman] one was clear. Not only that but the second half, two clear handballs - I've seen it on a DVD.

"People try to give Callum a reputation [for diving]. He shifted the ball - there was no contact on the ball. There was definitely contact on his leg, so I don't know how the referee can't give a penalty for that, and then book him.

"I think defenders in the final third clearly have a problem trying to handle and obviously they like to go in the ear of the referee. But Callum has to keep doing what he does best, which is taking on defenders. Maybe the way he falls is a little bit too much. He needs to try and stay on his feet more. But when there is contact there is contact."

The result leaves Wigan 16th in the Championship table, with just two wins from their first seven games.
