James Collins: Stewart Downing is "world class"

West Ham United defender James Collins feels that Stewart Downing is a "world-class player" and should be recalled into the England squad.

West Ham United defender James Collins believes that Stewart Downing is a "world-class player" and feels that he should be recalled into the England squad.

The 30-year-old has found his best form under Sam Allardyce, and played a crucial role in his side's 2-2 draw against Stoke City as he assisted Enner Valencia's strike and then netted the equaliser himself to earn the Hammers a point at the Britannia Stadium.

Collins told the club's official website: "It's no surprise to me because I obviously had three years at Aston Villa with him as well before he came down here.

"Stewie is a world-class player whether it's behind the strikers, in central midfield or out wide. The gaffer asked him to play out wide because of Diafra Sakho's injury and again he's put in a great performance, set a goal up and scored one. You can't ask for much more.

"I've been fortunate enough to play and train with him for a number of years now and good players can play anywhere. If he keeps playing the way he is playing, I'm sure an England call-up will not be far away."

Downing has admitted that he would love a recall to the England squad for Roy Hodgson's side's upcoming games against Slovenia and Scotland.
