Sam Allardyce: 'West Ham United gutted to concede late leveller'

Allardyce: 'West Ham gutted'

West Ham United manager Sam Allardyce has described the mood of his players as "gutted" after they conceded a stoppage-time equaliser against Manchester United in the final Premier League game of the weekend.

The Hammers held a 1-0 lead over the visitors, but couldn't hold on for what Allardyce felt would have been a deserved victory as Daley Blind popped up with a pinpoint volley in the 92nd minute.

Allardyce also said that Man Utd had to resort to "long ball" tactics to snatch a point from the match at Upton Park.

"The lads are absolutely gutted and so they should be," he told Sky Sports News. "It was a fantastic performance and I thought we were going to see it through but it wasn't to be.

"We just needed to find the second goal and didn't manage to even though we had chances. In the end, we couldn't cope with long-ball United - it was thump it forward and see what happens. It's not how you normally see United play but it got them the point in the end.

"If you look at the amount of saves David de Gea made today he is probably just as worthy of them getting the draw as Daley Blind getting the equaliser."

Had West Ham held on for victory, they would have moved to within three points of fourth-placed Man Utd. As it is, they remain eighth, seven points behind the Champions League spots.
