Shevchenko retires from international football

Andriy Shevchenko has announced his retirement from international football following Ukraine's elimination from Euro 2012.

The 35-year-old Dynamo Kiev forward won his 111th cap as a 70th-minute substitute in his country's 1-0 defeat to Group D rivals England in Donetsk last night.

"It was my last official game for Ukraine.," he said. "A bit later on I will arrange a farewell game to say goodbye to supporters.

"What are my plans now? I simply want to go home and put my arms around my kids and kiss my wife."

Shevchenko, who made his international debut in 1995, is Ukraine's all-time record goalscorer with 48.
