Rangers transfer news: £2.2m signing confirmed as seventh new arrival who ‘will add extra dimension’ to Russell Martin’s side

Martin rebuild continues as Rangers confirm “exciting” seventh summer signing

Rangers have announced the signing of highly-rated winger Djeidi Gassama from Sheffield Wednesday.

The 21-year-old, who has put pen to paper on a four-year contract at Ibrox, joins the Gers for a reported £2.2m and will wear the number 23 shirt.

Gassama becomes Rangers’ seventh signing of the summer transfer window under new head coach Russell Martin, who continues to strengthen his squad ahead of his debut campaign in charge of the Scottish giants.

“I am very happy to be here and to join the club,” Gassama told Rangers’ official website. “I am very excited to start with my new club, it is a club with a lot of history, and I am very happy. This is a big club, and I need that for my next level and I think it can help me progress.

Martin added: “We are very excited to bring Djeidi to the club. He is certainly an exciting player who will get supporters on the edge of their seats, and I believe he will add an extra dimension to our attack with his qualities.

“He is hungry to improve as a player and, most importantly, is desperate to pull on the Rangers jersey and help deliver success to the club.

Sporting Director Kevin Thelwell continued: “We are delighted to secure Djeidi’s signature. His attributes are well-suited to the challenges that we’ll face both domestically and on the European stage, and he arrives with considerable experience under his belt at only 21.

“He is on an upward trajectory in his young career, and we look forward to seeing him in action.”

Who is Rangers’ new signing Gassama?

Born in Mauritania, Gassama is a France Under-20 international who began his career with Paris Saint-Germain after working his way through their youth ranks.

The winger made his first and only Ligue 1 appearance for the French giants in May 2022, before spending the following season on loan at Belgian outfit Eupen where he made 20 first-team appearances.

Gassama was then signed by Sheffield Wednesday on a permanent deal in the summer of 2023 and after experiencing a challenging first year at Hillsborough, he made significant progress in the 2024-25 season and established himself as a first-team star under head coach Danny Rohl.

Only Josh Windass made as many appearances for the Owls as Gassama (47), who also scored eight Championship goals - the joint second-most of any Wednesday player last season.

Gassama leaves a Sheffield Wednesday side in financial turmoil and is ready to begin a fresh challenge at Rangers, who will take part in their first competitive match of the new season in Champions League second-round qualifying against Panathinaikos on July 22.
