Sunderland give trial to former Schalke 04 striker Chinedu Obasi

Sunderland boss Sam Allardyce reveals that he has given a trial to former Schalke 04 striker Chinedu Obasi as he seeks to bolster his frontline.

Sunderland boss Sam Allardyce has confirmed that the club have handed a trial to former Schalke 04 forward Chinedu Obasi.

The 29-year-old was released by the German side in the summer, having struggled for playing time due to a spate of injuries in his four-year spell at the Veltins-Arena.

Allardyce outlined his desire to bring in a striker to bolster his squad, but has revealed that the Nigeria international faces a challenge to earn a contract because of his injury problems.

"There's a triallist in at the moment. He used to play for Schalke but he's been injured," Allardyce told reporters. "He's a Nigerian international and we are just seeing because he's got a reasonably good CV, in terms of where he's played before.

"He has been fraught with a bad injury, which is why he's not been fixed up with a club yet, but we'd like to see him for this week and perhaps next week.

"But I need someone who has an impact now, not in three weeks time, so it will be a difficult task I think. But he's here and if he can show us anything we haven't got then there maybe something we can do."

Obasi has been capped 18 times by Nigeria, scoring four goals.
