Wickham injury "not as bad as first thought"

Sunderland striker Connor Wickham has revealed that the injury he sustained at the weekend was not as serious as originally feared.

The 18-year-old was stretchered off after two minutes as the Black Cats slumped to a 1-0 defeat to Manchester United at Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon.

Manager Steve Bruce admitted after the match that his centre-forward may have suffered a lengthy injury, although no longer appears to be the case.

"Scans showing injury not as bad as first thought, waiting to see a knee specialist later in the week," Wickham wrote on Twitter.

The youngster joined Sunderland in the summer from Championship side Ipswich Town.
