Gus Poyet: 'I am not Sunderland's manager'

Gus Poyet appears to criticise Sunderland's transfer policy by claiming that he is not the manager of the club, preferring instead to be known as the "head coach".

Gus Poyet has stated that he is not the manager of Sunderland, claiming that his command over his club's transfer policy means that he is more of a "head coach".

The Black Cats are without a win in six games and have just one victory since the 8-0 thrashing at Southampton in October.

Poyet appeared to criticise his club's transfer policy, telling BBC Sport: "I am a head coach. I am not going to be a head coach when it suits and a manager when it doesn't. That side is down to recruitment.

"I want more quality. Do I think I'll get it? I don't know. You know what is missing. It is clear what we need to do. That is down to recruitment."

Paolo Di Canio, Poyet's predecessor, previously claimed that he had not signed any of the 14 players the club acquired in the summer of 2013 when he was in charge.
