Jermain Defoe backs Watmore for success

Sunderland striker Jermain Defoe has backed Duncan Watmore to have success in the future.

The 21-year-old has featured from the bench this season for the Black Cats in the Premier League, scoring once in their defeat to Norwich City along with a strike in the Capital One Cup against Exeter City.

Watmore has also been a key member of Gareth Southgate's England Under-21s side, and Defoe believes that his teammate will continue to go from strength to strength, having signed a four-year contract extension with the Black Cats last week.

He told the club's official website: "Dunc is brilliant and so athletic, quick, direct and confident.

"He's a young lad and I'm delighted for him because I remember when I was in that situation – all he just wants to do is play football.

"He's a bright lad, a nice boy and he's going to do really well for this football club. He's the future."

Sunderland face Stoke City in the Premier League later today.
