Sunderland boss Paolo Di Canio has promised that next season his side will be the "fittest" they have ever been.
The Italian guided his team to Premier League safety as they finished in 17th place after securing eight points in their last seven games under Di Canio's tenure.
Di Canio told the Sunderland Echo: "My regret is that I only had seven weeks, but it's not an issue because we were OK (in the relegation battle).
"But for the future, you will see the fittest Sunderland team that has ever been. That has to be the base for a footballer.
"In the first two weeks, they felt a bit heavy, but then you could see the difference. Imagine the change after one year."
Sunderland are reportedly trying to secure the future of keeper Simon Mignolet at the club by offering him a new deal.
