Jermain Defoe wants Steve McClaren to snub Newcastle United for Sunderland

Defoe wants Steve McClaren at Sunderland

Sunderland striker Jermain Defoe has said that he wants Steve McClaren to snub Newcastle United in favour of becoming the Black Cats' new manager.

The former Derby County and England boss is expected to join the Magpies next week, but Defoe believes that he would be a better fit at the Stadium of Light.

"You have to think about who is available, those out of work but someone who can get results," the Daily Star quotes Defoe as saying.

"Sam Allardyce fits that description and so too does Steve McClaren.

"He's someone I played under for England. He's a good coach and I always enjoyed training with him. He's a good manager with good experience especially at this level."

Sunderland are seeking a new manager after Dick Advocaat opted to retire having guided the club to Premier League safety.
