Sunderland boss Sam Allardyce: 'We will take the game to Newcastle United'

Sunderland boss Sam Allardyce reveals that his side will take the match to their bitter rivals Newcastle United in the Wear-Tyne derby at the Stadium of Light.

Sunderland boss Sam Allardyce has said that his side will take the attack to Newcastle United in the Wear-Tyne derby on Sunday.

The Black Cats are yet to win in the Premier League in nine attempts this season, and lost their first match under the tenure of the 60-year-old in a 1-0 defeat to West Bromwich Albion last week.

Allardyce has revealed that he will be changing his side's approach for the clash against the Magpies after opting for defensive tactics against the Baggies.

He told the Sunderland Echo: "There's options in terms of more flair players, better equipped to create a few more chances. If there was one thing which was disappointing at West Brom, we could have created an awful lot more with the amount of possession we had.

"I can't argue with [West Brom] having two shots on target, away from home. We want to have that solid base, and we showed a very solid base. But that won't matter for the derby. Tactically, that's not going to work.

"We're going to have to show a different tactic tomorrow than the one we had at West Brom. We need to do more in possession to make life as difficult as possible for Newcastle to have any control. That's very important, particularly in the early part of the game."

Sunderland are bottom of the league going into the match at the Stadium of Light.
