Stuttgart vs Borussia M'bach - prediction, team news, lineups

After failing to win on the opening weekend of the new Bundesliga season, Stuttgart and Borussia Monchengladbach lock horns at MHPArena on Saturday afternoon.

There has been little to separate Die Roten and Die Fohlen in recent meetings, with both teams winning three games each across the last six in the German top flight.

Match preview

Stuttgart did not kick-start the new campaign as they would have hoped, as they suffered a 2-1 away defeat to Union Berlin, with Tiago Tomas’s 86th-minute strike proving to be merely a consolation after Ilyas Ansah scored twice for the hosts.

Die Roten also lost in the German Super Cup to Bayern Munich by the same scoreline a week earlier, but the reigning DFB-Pokal champions made an epic start to the defence of their trophy on Tuesday when they beat second-tier outfit Eintracht Braunschweig 8-7 on penalties following a 4-4 draw after 120 minutes of enthralling first-round action.

Turning Stuttgart’s league form around will now be one of the top priorities for head coach Sebastian Hoeness, who has seen his side win only eight Bundesliga matches in 2025, along with three draws and nine defeats.

Stuttgart beat Augsburg 4-0 in their final home match of the 2024-25 season, ending an unwanted club-record streak of six consecutive home defeats in the Bundesliga; only Heidenheim (eight) have lost more home league games than Die Roten since the turn of the year.

It took Stuttgart until matchday three to record their first Bundesliga win last season, beating none other than Monchengladbach 3-1 away from home, and another victory on Saturday would help Die Roten avoid losing back-to-back games at the start of a new campaign for the first time since 2018-19 when they were relegated from the top flight.

Borussia Monchengladbach began the new season with a 3-2 victory over fifth-tier side Atlas Delmenhorst in the first round of the DFB-Pokal, before holding newly-promoted Hamburger SV to a 0-0 draw away from home in their opening Bundesliga fixture last weekend.

Die Fohlen faced the most xG of any Bundesliga side last term (64.3), with only four clubs conceding more goals (57), and while they may have kept a clean sheet on matchday one, they still faced 17 shots against Hamburger, who also enjoyed 62% possession.

Including last season, Monchengladbach are without a Bundesliga win in eight games (D3 L5), the longest current run in the German top flight and the club’s longest under head coach Gerardo Seoane since his arrival in July 2023.

Nevertheless, Monchengladbach won 2-1 in their last visits to Stuttgart in February of this year and they will endeavour to claim back-to-back away wins over Die Roten for the first time since a run of four between 2015 and 2017. Only against FC Koln (83) have Die Fohlen accumulated more Bundesliga away points (83, adjusted to three points per win where applicable) than against Stuttgart (53).

Team News

Stuttgart will have to cope without start striker Nick Woltemade who is on the verge of completing a club-record transfer to Newcastle United, while Justin Diehl (muscle), Silas (foot) and Leonidas Stergiou (ankle) are all sidelined with injuries.

Luca Jaquez has emerged as a major doubt after taking an elbow straight to the face and breaking his nose in last weekend’s clash with Union Berlin, while Jeff Chabot will have a groin issue assessed ahead of kickoff.

Ermedin Demirovic will be required to step up in the final third in the absence of Woltemade; the Bosnian scored 15 Bundesliga goals last season and found the net twice in Stuttgart’s DFB-Pokal win on Tuesday.

As for Borussia Monchengladbach, Tim Kleindienst has scored four goals in his last five Bundesliga meetings with Stuttgart, but he is ruled out of this weekend’s game with a knee injury, joining Wael Mohya (knee), Nathan Ngoumou (Achilles) and Miklas Swider (ill) in the treatment room.

Giovanni Reyna joined Die Fohlen from Borussia Dortmund last weekend and the attacking midfielder could made his debut on Saturday. The USA international has scored three goals against Stuttgart and only against Holstein Kiel has he ever netted as many goals against the same opponent.

Stuttgart possible starting lineup:

Nubel; Vagnoman, Jeltsch, Chabot, Mittelstadt; Karazor, Stiller; Leweling, Undav, Tomas; Demirovic

Borussia Monchengladbach possible starting lineup:

Nicolas; Scally, Elvedi, Diks, Ullrich; Reitz, Sander; Honorat, Stoger, Hack; Tabakovic

We say: Stuttgart 2-1 Borussia Monchengladbach

The respective away side won both encounters between these two teams last season, but this fixture has never seen three successive away victories, so history bodes well for Stuttgart on this occasion.

Both teams will back themselves to make the net ripple, but we feel that Die Roten may just edge this one, despite the absence of Woltemade up front.
