Why Lucas Bergvall signed new Tottenham contract as Roberto De Zerbi reacts to shock boost

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Lucas Bergvall has signed a new long-term contract with the club following a summer of whirlwind transfer speculation.

The 20-year-old has struggled to win over Roberto De Zerbi since the Italian took charge and has been an unused substitute in Spurs' last two Premier League fixtures against Newcastle United and Nottingham Forest.

Bergvall was also taken off at half time in the 3-0 loss to Brentford on the opening weekend, although he completed 90 minutes of the 5-1 EFL Cup crushing of Charlton Athletic.

The Sweden international's future was the subject of much debate over the summer following the arrivals of Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes, though, as Bergvall was reportedly concerned about his playing time.

However, after Tottenham rejected a £46m bid from Newcastle for Bergvall, who had also caught the eye of Newcastle and Sunderland, De Zerbi confirmed that the midfielder would stay at the club for the next half-season at least.

Bergvall was already contracted to Tottenham until 2031, but in a surprise turn of events, the 2006-born starlet has now extended his terms in North London, although it is not clear how long his renewal runs to.

Explaining his decision to sign a new deal with Tottenham, Bergvall told the club's official website: "I think we're building something great here. It's an exciting time for the Club and that's why I'm happy to extend my contract.

"I'm always trying to achieve as much as possible, to be the best version of myself both on and off the pitch and I know this is the right place to do that.

"Personally, my goal is to produce more for the team - performances, goals and assists - to help as much as I can. I'm getting better every day in training and I'm looking forward to what will be a really good season ahead."

De Zerbi, meanwhile, stressed the need for continued patience with the midfielder, adding: "Every day in training you can see Lucas' desire to learn, improve and push himself to the highest level.

"Lucas is brave, he wants responsibility and has the personality to play in big moments. He also understands that development is a process and he has shown a fantastic attitude towards working on the areas of his game where he can become even better.

"I believe his best football is still ahead of him and we want to give Lucas the platform to reach his full potential."

Bergvall supposedly informed Tottenham of his desire to leave the club over the summer, as he and his camp were concerned about his development pathway following the arrivals of Tonali and Fernandes.

However, according to journalist Alasdair Gold, Bergvall is now feeling happier about the prospect of progressing in his preferred position, and there have been numerous positive talks between the player and the club.

Spurs were never minded to sell Bergvall, who now shares the club's commitment to a long-term personal project, two years after his arrival from Djurgarden.

The midfielder has scored two goals and set up nine more in 80 matches for Tottenham in that time, starting 10 Europa League games during Spurs' triumphant 2024-25 campaign before missing the final through injury.

Despite his new deal, Bergvall is expected to start on the bench when Tottenham take on Everton in Saturday's Premier League showdown.
