Roberto De Zerbi has confirmed that Lucas Bergvall will remain at Tottenham Hotspur beyond the end of the summer transfer window.
Spurs have significantly strengthened their midfield this summer, spending a combined £185m to bring in Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United and Mateus Fernandes from West Ham United.
Bergvall joined Tottenham in the summer of 2024 and has since made 78 appearances for the club, scoring twice across all competitions.
The 20-year-old had reportedly grown concerned about his prospects of regular game time under De Zerbi in 2026-27 and is believed to have submitted a transfer request at the beginning of the summer.
Newcastle United saw an offer in the region of £46m rejected for Bergvall, while Sunderland and Nottingham Forest were also credited with an interest in the Swedish midfielder.
Lucas Bergvall future: Roberto De Zerbi rules out exit
Tottenham rate Bergvall highly and are believed to have placed a £60m valuation on him, but it now appears certain that he will remain in North London.
De Zerbi has confirmed that the midfielder wants to stay, although the Spurs boss was unable to offer the same assurance over Pape Matar Sarr's future.
"Lucas Bergvall, 100 per cent [he is staying]. We spoke a lot in pre-season. He’s a top player, a top potential player. I like that he stays but I think now he wants to stay and we have no problem," De Zerbi said, as quoted by Football London.
"For Pape, he started pre-season late because he stayed in Senegal until the first week in August, I think. He’s a good player. I don’t know if he stays or not, we have to analyse the situation, but he is another very, very important player."
Tottenham to make more signings before the end of window
Spurs have already welcomed six new players this summer, with De Zerbi adding both depth and genuine quality across several areas of the pitch.
After escaping relegation by the narrowest of margins last season, Tottenham have made it clear that merely surviving will not be enough this time around, and their ambitious recruitment drive reflects a determination to re-establish themselves as a serious Premier League force.
The spending, however, may not be over just yet, with De Zerbi reportedly keen to add further firepower in the wide areas before the window closes.
Tottenham are said to be progressing in their pursuits of Manchester City duo Savinho and Omar Marmoush, and if both deals can be completed, Spurs' remarkable summer spending could rise to around £377m.
