Last season, Wimmer was called upon to cover for Jan Vertonghen after the defender was hit with a lengthy injury spell.
The Austrian made 21 appearances in all competitions under manager Mauricio Pochettino in the 2015-16 campaign.
Wimmer was also included in his national side for Euro 2016, where he played in a group match against Portugal.
