Tottenham Hotspur missed the chance to close the gap on league leaders Manchester City after they were held to a 1-1 draw with Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday afternoon.

Spurs started the match the stronger and Luka Modric almost opened the scoring after just four minutes with an effort from distance, but it drifted wide.

The home side continued to dominate the tie in the early stages and Gareth Bale went close after 18 minutes, but Christophe Berra produced a diving block. For all Spurs' dominance, however, it was the away side who took the lead.

The goal came after 22 minutes when Steven Fletcher followed up a Roger Johnson header to place the ball into an empty net.

Spurs continued to push for the equaliser as the half wore on, however, and Rafael Van der Vaart and Bale both went close before the 30-minute mark.

Spurs felt they should have had an equaliser after 44 minutes when Emmanuel Adebayor had the ball in the Wolves net, but it was ruled offside when replays seemed to suggest it should have stood.

Tottenham did level the match, however, after 51 minutes when Modric fired in an effort from outside the area after he was found by Bale.

Spurs continued to push for the winner in the latter stages and Bale and Kyle Walker both went close 20 minutes from time.

Jermain Defoe might have won it for the home side after 78 minutes, but Wolves keeper Wayne Hennessey produced a fine save as the away side camped in their own half.

Tottenham will look to return to winning ways when they travel to Manchester City next weekend, while Wolves host Aston Villa.
