Preview: Rangers vs. Tottenham Hotspur - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Saturday's pre-season clash between Rangers and Tottenham Hotspur, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Rangers and Tottenham Hotspur will compete for the Walter Tull Memorial Cup on Saturday afternoon when they lock horns in Glasgow.

The home side recorded a 3-1 win over West Ham United in their last pre-season clash on Tuesday, while Tottenham played out a 1-1 draw with Sevilla in their second friendly of the summer on Saturday.

Rangers started their preparations for the 2022-23 campaign with a 2-1 victory over Blackpool on July 16 before running out 3-1 winners over West Ham in their second friendly of the summer on Tuesday.

Tom Lawrence, Ryan Kent and Rabbi Matondo were on the scoresheet against the Hammers, and the Gers will now be looking to make it a Premier League double with a victory over Antonio Conte's side.

This match will mark the end of the team's preparations for the new campaign, as they will begin their Scottish Premiership season away to Livingston on July 30.

Rangers have been busy this summer in terms of signings, bringing in Ben Davies, Matondo, Antonio Colak, Lawrence, John Souttar and Malik Tillman.

Calvin Bassey has been the team's leading departure, moving to Ajax for a fee in excess of £20m, and Giovanni van Bronckhorst's side will again look to battle Celtic for the Scottish Premiership title next season, with the Hoops finishing four points clear at the summit last term.

Tottenham, meanwhile, have played two pre-season fixtures this summer, recording a 6-3 victory over a K-League XI on July 13 before drawing 1-1 with Sevilla three days later.

Spurs will now continue their preparations for the new campaign with a friendly at Ibrox, while their final pre-season match will be against Italian giants Roma on July 30.

Relatively speaking, Conte's side will not play too much football ahead of the new Premier League season, and it remains to be seen whether they will hit the ground running, with the capital outfit facing Southampton in their campaign opener on August 6.

Tottenham, who finished fourth in the Premier League table last season, have been busy during the summer market, bringing in Richarlison, Yves Bissouma, Djed Spence, Ivan Perisic and Fraser Forster, while Clement Lenglet has arrived on a season-long loan from Barcelona.

Spurs will also crucially keep hold of both Harry Kane and Son Heung-min this summer, and Conte's team will believe that they are capable of moving closer to the likes of Manchester City and Liverpool, with the duo again likely to battle for the Premier League title.

Rangers are likely to have a number of new signings in their starting side on Saturday, with Matondo, Colak, Lawrence and Souttar all expected to be in the first XI.

Colak, who has arrived at the club from PAOK this summer, is expected to lead the line with support from Kent and Matondo, with the latter impressing against West Ham last time out.

Head coach Van Bronckhorst will now be shaping his side for the start of the new campaign, with James Tavernier and Connor Goldson also set to start at the back for the Gers.

As for Tottenham, new signings Bissouma and Forster were not involved in South Korea after testing positive for COVID-19, but the pair are likely to be included in the squad for this match.

Spence could also be involved following his recent arrival from Middlesbrough, while there will be changes to the side that started last time out against Sevilla.

Ivan Perisic and Clement Lenglet are also in line to make their first appearances for the club, with both expected to feature at some stage of the contest.

Kane, Son and Richarlison could again play as the front three, but Emerson Royal and Rodrigo Bentancur are both pushing to be involved from the first whistle on Saturday afternoon.

Rangers possible starting lineup:
McLaughlin; Tavernier, Goldson, Souttar, Barisic; Lundstram, Lawrence, Kamara; Kent, Colak, Matondo

Tottenham Hotspur possible starting lineup:
Lloris; Dier, Sanchez, Romero; Emerson, Bentancur, Hojbjerg, Perisic; Richarlison, Kane, Son

SM words green background

We say: Rangers 1-1 Tottenham Hotspur

Both managers will view this match as valuable preparation for the new campaign, and we are expecting a close fixture on Saturday, with Rangers now on the verge of starting their 2022-23 season. Spurs will have the superior quality in their squad, but we can see a low-scoring draw taking place this weekend.
