Jan Vertonghen: 'Andros Townsend can be the new Gareth Bale'

Tottenham Hotspur defender Jan Vertonghen believes that Andros Townsend can be 'the new Gareth Bale' if he continues to work hard in training.

Tottenham Hotspur defender Jan Vertonghen has claimed that Andros Townsend can be 'the new Gareth Bale' following the youngster's recent performances for club and country.

The 22-year-old winger scored on his England debut two weeks ago before finding the net for Spurs during Sunday's 2-0 win over Aston Villa in the Premier League.

Vertonghen believes that Townsend can reach the same level as former Tottenham talisman Bale if he keeps training hard.

"I think Andros can be our new Gareth Bale," Sky Sports News quotes the Belgian as saying.

"He has so much pace and technique and skills, and he can do it with both feet. I hope he can keep going like this and he can even be our best player.

"Can he reach the same level as Bale? Maybe one day, if he keeps working - and he will. He's young. In two or three years I think he can go to that level, yes."

Townsend signed a new four-year contract with Tottenham on Friday.
