Andros Townsend: 'I live for football'

Andros Townsend admits that his recent rise to the top was not expected, but he is determined to continue his exploits for both club and country.

Andros Townsend has admitted that his whirlwind rise in recent weeks is something that he did not expect.

The winger has established himself in the Tottenham Hotspur side and made two consecutive international starts, playing a pivotal role as England qualified for the World Cup.

He appreciated the chance that Harry Redknapp gave him on loan at Queens Park Rangers last season and is determined to stay at the top after working hard to get there.

"It has been fantastic, beyond my expectations," Townsend told The Telegraph. "Even in the summer I never dreamt I'd be playing week-in-week-out for my club as well as having two caps for England under my belt.

"I have had to wait a long time to get my chance in the spotlight. I have had nine loans in the lower leagues so I am not going to get carried away. I have to thank my manager at Tottenham for giving me the chance this season. Last season Harry Redknapp took a chance on me, for which I will be forever grateful.

"I have seen it before where players have had great starts and then faded, so I can't let that happen. I live for football. I am not one of those who goes out drinking or partying. On a Saturday night I go home and watch the Spanish football."

Townsend and his Spurs teammates travel to Aston Villa this afternoon.
