Referee Michael Salisbury dropped after Kaoru Mitoma penalty error

Referee Michael Salisbury has been dropped from the latest round of Premier League fixtures after his failure to award Brighton & Hove Albion a penalty in their defeat to Tottenham Hotspur at the weekend.

During the second half at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Mitoma - who had already had a goal ruled out for handball - went down in the penalty box under a challenge from Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.

On-field referee Stuart Attwell waved away appeals, while VAR official Salisbury also overlooked the incident, despite replays showing Hojbjerg clearly treading on Mitoma's foot.

Brighton were also denied two goals on the day for handball, and they have since received an apology from the PGMOL for the Mitoma incident.

Salisbury has subsequently been dropped for this weekend's matches, but Attwell remains on duty and will be in the VAR room for Wolverhampton Wanderers' clash with Brentford.

Despite dominating for large periods against Tottenham, Brighton ultimately fell to a 2-1 loss thanks to Son Heung-min and Harry Kane's goals either side of Lewis Dunk's header.

Managers Cristian Stellini and Roberto De Zerbi were both sent off after a bust-up between the two dugouts, and the latter insisted that his side were denied a "clear" spot kick on the day.
