Harry Kane says that he will try his best to overtake Alan Shearer for the most Premier League goals in a single calendar year when Tottenham Hotspur take on Southampton.

Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane has revealed that he has his sights set on overtaking Alan Shearer for the most Premier League goals scored in a calendar year.

The 24-year-old racked up his 34th, 35th and 36th top-flight goals of 2017 in the Lilywhites' 3-0 win over surprise package Burnley on Saturday evening.

Kane has now equalled Newcastle United legend Shearer's 22-year record and still has one game, at home to Southampton on Boxing Day, to make another record his own.

Speaking to BT Sport after the victory at Turf Moor, the England international said: "I am aware I've equalled Alan Shearer's record. Just going into this game I thought I can get a couple and then there's Southampton to play.

"It's a nice present that's for sure. It was a tough game, we knew it'd be tough - it was 3-0 but we could have had more. You always want to finish a game off away from home.

"We didn't want to give them an incentive. It was a difficult place to come. Let's see what happens on Boxing Day."

Kane has also equalled Shearer's 1995 record for the most Premier League hat-tricks in a single calendar year, notching his fifth against Burnley.
