Tottenham working with police after "abhorrent" fan chants in Man United win

Tottenham Hotspur have released a statement condemning "abhorrent" homophobic chants from supporters in their 3-0 victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford.

An offensive song could clearly be heard from the away end during the Premier League showdown, and Spurs have confirmed that they are working with police to identify those taking part in the chanting.

Tottenham affirmed that any supporters found to have either started or joined in with the "hugely offensive" chants would face strong sanctions, most likely a lengthy stadium ban.

"The Club is aware of abhorrent homophobic chanting from sections of our away support at Old Trafford today. This is simply unacceptable, hugely offensive and no way to show support for the team," Tottenham said.

"The Club will be working closely with the Police and stewards to identify anyone instigating or joining in with the chanting - we shall take the strongest possible action in accordance with our Sanctions and Banning Policy.

"Supporters in attendance today can report anything they've seen or heard in confidence to [email protected]. We shall be continuing our work with our LGBTQ+ supporters' association, Proud Lilywhites, to ensure a welcoming and inclusive environment for all fans on matchdays.

"We are justly proud of our superb and loyal support, home and away. However, we all have a responsibility to act as ambassadors of Tottenham Hotspur and discrimination of any kind has no place at our Club."

Spurs ran out comfortable winners over Erik ten Hag's side at Old Trafford, as Brennan Johnson opened the scoring early in the first half before Bruno Fernandes received his first-ever red card in a Man United shirt.

Ange Postecoglou's side made full use of their numerical advantage in the second half, as Dejan Kulusevski and Dominic Solanke rubber-stamped an emphatic victory for the Lilywhites, their fourth in a row in all competitions.

Solanke's effort also saw the £65m striker join an elite group of English Premier League goalscorers, and Postecoglou's side have risen to eighth in the table thanks to their second straight league win.

Spurs now have three days to recover before they travel to Ferencvaros in the Europa League, and their next Premier League game comes away to Brighton & Hove Albion on October 6.
