Hull City's chances of Premier League survival were dealt a severe blow on Saturday with a 2-0 defeat away to Tottenham Hotspur.

Following a goalless first half, the hosts took the lead with 54 minutes played when Nacer Chadli rounded goalkeeper Steve Harper before slotting in.

Spurs then sealed the points just seven minutes later as Danny Rose smashed the ball home after being picked out by Ryan Mason.

Hello and welcome to Sports Mole's live text coverage of this afternoon's Premier League clash between Tottenham Hotspur and Hull City at White Hart Lane. Both teams are in need of the points this afternoon, but for very different reasons. Spurs are still chasing Europa League qualification, while Hull are battling desperately to avoid the drop. Team news will be through shortly.

SPURS: Lloris; Dier, Fazio, Vertonghen, Rose; Bentaleb, Mason; Chadli, Eriksen, Lamela; Kane

SPURS SUBS: Vorm, Yedlin, Dembele, Paulinho, Stambouli, Townsend, Soldado

After seeing his side suffer a resounding 3-0 defeat at Stoke City last weekend, Spurs coach Mauricio Pochettino has made just the one change this afternoon as Danny Rose replaces Vlad Chiriches. Rose was named on the bench at the Britannia Stadium due to concerns over a groin problem, but the full-back seems to have made a full recovery.

HULL: Harper; Chester, McShane, Dawson, Elmohamady; Meyler, Huddlestone, Brady, Quinn; Jelavic, N'Doye

HULL: McGregor, Rosenior, Bruce, Hernandez, Sagbo, Aluko, Robertson

Hull boss Steve Bruce has made two changes to his starting XI following last week's damaging 1-0 defeat to Burnley. Nikica Jelavic and David Meyler return for the Tigers, replacing Jake Livermore and Sone Aluko. Hull announced on Friday that Livermore had been suspended following reports that he tested positive for cocaine.

Right, let's get down to business. Today's clash at White Hart Lane is huge from a Hull perspective because of their troubles at the wrong end of the table. The Tigers currently sit two points adrift of safety with just two games left to play this season. It really is make or break time for the club.

Things looked positive for Hull at the end of May as the recorded consecutive wins over Crystal Palace and Liverpool, but defeats to Arsenal and Burnley have seen Steve Bruce's side plunged deep into trouble.

Hull boss Steve Bruce: "Let's hope we can take it to the last game - that's our objective now. We need to get a result at Tottenham and keep it alive. We need seven or eight of our players at the top of their form on Saturday. We have to perform to the level to give us a chance.

"Can we come out fighting? If we get beat we get beat with our boots on and if that's not enough we have to accept the consequences. We sincerely hope there is going to be one last twist, it's our job to get a result and give us a chance. It's up to us to produce a performance, which we know were capable of."

While Hull are scrapping for their lives near the foot of the table, Spurs remain on course to qualify for next season's Europa League. Mauricio Pochettino's men have struggled in recent weeks, though, failing to win any of their last three matches in the Premier League.

UPDATE! Tottenham are essentially fighting it out with Southampton for sixth place and it looks as if they will start their game against Hull in seventh because the Saints are currently thrashing Aston Villa 5-1 at St Mary's Stadium. If things stay as they are there, Spurs will be two points behind Ronald Koeman's side but with a game in hand.

Tottenham coach Mauricio Pochettino: "I think this is important. Our motivation needs to be like them. You play for survival, you play to take a place in the Europa League. I think you need to be motivated in the same way.

"Always it's difficult to play against a team that plays for survival in the Premier League. They have one, maybe two chances and this is the first for them, but for us we need to feel it's as important like them. We play to finish in the top five or six and we need to get the three points. We need to feel it's not only Hull playing for something important."

Tottenham fans won't need to be reminded of this, but their team has found winning games at White Hart Lane difficult this season. The Londoners have triumphed in just half of their 18 matches on home soil so far. That said, Hull's away record is pretty bad, with the Tigers recording just three victories on the road.

HEAD TO HEAD: Spurs have the superior record when it comes to past meetings between these teams, winning nine times out of 22 encounters. Meanwhile, Hull have been victorious on six occasions. There have also been seven draws.

This season's reverse fixture at the KC Stadium ended in a 2-1 win for Tottenham thanks to a last-gasp strike from Christian Eriksen. The last time that Hull left White Hart Lane with the spoils was back in October 2008 when Geovanni's superb free kick gave the Tigers the victory.

UPDATE! Southampton have indeed leapfrogged Spurs into sixth place thanks to a 6-1 hammering of Aston Villa at St Mary's Stadium. The Saints scored five of their goals during a first-half blitz, with Sadio Mane scoring the fastest hat-trick ever seen in Premier League history. You can read our match report here.

What will Steve Bruce be telling his players as they prepare to head out of the dressing room? The Tigers will fancy their chances of leaving the capital with a positive result today due to Tottenham's shaky recent form, but they will have to be careful because of the wealth of attacking talent that the hosts possess. Keep it tight at the back and nick a goal from a set piece - that will probably be the Hull plan.

Not long until kickoff now as the players start to emerge in the tunnel at White Hart Lane. What a huge match this could prove to be for Hull come the end of the season. There's still a fair bit riding on it for Tottenham, but make no mistake - today is all about the Tigers.

Here they come!

KICKOFF! The teams are out, the pre-match handshakes have been done, and it will be Tottenham to kick us off. Here we go!

It's been a positive start from the hosts, who have seen most of the ball during the early stages. One move sees Rose played in down the left, but the full-back just can't reach the ball before it goes out of play. The defender has dyed his hair red, which might not go down too well with the home fans considering their hatred of Arsenal...

Hull have enjoyed a bit of possession in the last few moments, but they're yet to really test Lloris in the Spurs goal. Elmohamady whips a cross into the box from the right, though it's an easy one for Vertonghen to clear.

Steve Bruce will be pleased with how side side have played so far. The visitors have fought well for the ball, tackling hard and doing plenty of running. They're certainly looking up for it. Jelavic and N'Doye have looked lively in the final third.

CHANCE! The game's first proper opening falls the way of the home side as Dier gets in front of his marker to meet a corner at the near post. The defender gets a clean head to it, but his effort goes wide. He probably should have done better there.

CHANCE! Now it's Hull who come close as Fazio gifts the ball to N'Doye, who makes a quick run down the right. The forward tries to pick out Jelavic at the back post with a cross, but he puts too much on it, forcing Jelavic to head over on the stretch.

OFF THE POST! Hull come within inches of taking the lead as Jelavic smashes the woodwork! Elmohamady does well down the right, making up plenty of ground before whipping a cross into the box. It's flicked through to Jelavic, who is lurking at the far post again, but this time the Croatian sees his powerful shot hit the frame of the goal and go behind. The visitors are on top at the moment.

Hull are looking hungrier right now as they take the game to Spurs. The hosts have struggled to get going, it must be said. They win a free kick on the right after Quinn chops down Kane, though Lamela's delivery is a poor one that the away side deal with convincingly.

Half a chance for the visitors as N'Doye and Jelavic link up, with the former sending the latter through on goal. However, a lack of pace from Jelavic allows Dier to track back and recover. A fully fit Jelavic may well have raced beyond Dier there.

CHANCE! So close for the hosts as a neat passing move ends with Kane getting the ball down the left and hitting a low cross into the heart of the Hull box. There are plenty of bodies in there, but it somehow evades everyone. That was a golden opportunity. Against the run of play, it should be added.

Hull put Spurs on the back foot yet again with another slick attack. A cross from the right is met by Jelavic, but his overhead kick goes high and wide. That would have been an outrageous goal. Both sets of fans applaud the Croatian for trying such an eye-catching effort.

Hull have certainly been the better side, but will they regret not taking one of these chances. It's all well and good creating so many opportunities in front of goal, though it means nothing if you don't stick one in the back of the net.

Spurs are trying to build some momentum, though they're finding it hard to keep any pressure on Hull. Bentaleb puts a decent cross in from the right following a zippy passing move, but no-one can get on the end of it. Tottenham's approach play has been solid this afternoon. It's just the end product that has been missing.

CHANCE! Brilliant play from Mason as the midfielder wriggles away from his marker on the ledt before crossing into the box. While Lamela is the first to get to it, the Argentine can only poke a tame shot wide of the target. That was a tough chance in all fairness because the ball was pinged into him at pace.

Tottenham are ending the half in the ascendancy after being second best for much of it. They're forcing Hull back now, keeping possession well and not giving the visitors anything to feed off. Chadli and Kane try to work an opening around the edge of the box, but Dawson is alert to the danger and clears.

YELLOW CARD! The first booking of the day goes to Spurs midfielder Mason for a cynical foul on N'Doye.

Hull might be pleased to hear the half-time whistle considering how Spurs have fought back in this match. The hosts are doing most of the pressing at the moment, though Hull are still looking like a threat on the counter-attack.

There will be ONE MINUTE of added time...

HALF TIME: SPURS 0-0 HULL

Anthony Taylor blows his whistle, bringing the curtain down on an entertaining opening 45 minutes of football at White Hart Lane. There have been chances at both ends, but a lack of finishing means that it's 0-0.

Spurs started the match positively before Hull took control. The visitors have had the better opportunities in front of goal and have looked pretty dangerous on the offensive. The best chance fell the way of Nikica Jelavic with 18 minutes played, but the Hull striker could only rattle the woodwork at the far post.

While the hosts have had their fair share of possession, they've struggled to put consistent pressure on Hull. The likes of Kane, Chadli and Eriksen have been lively so far, though they've lacked that clinical edge in the final third of the pitch.

Premier League half-time scores:

Burnley 0-0 Stoke
QPR 0-1 Newcastle
Sunderland 0-0 Leicester
West Ham 0-0 Everton

Steve Bruce could well be telling his players to keep playing in the second half as they have done in the first. The Tigers have been very positive so far and look up for the fight.

SECOND HALF UNDERWAY! The teams are out for the second half and it will be Hull to kick us off again. No changes from either manager during the break.

CHANCE! Hull carve out a decent opportunity just a minute into the second half as Brady's corner from the left is met by the head of McShane, but the defender can only nod wide.

CHANCE! The first half is only a few minutes old, but Hull are putting plenty of pressure on Spurs. Their latest opportunity comes from another delivery out wide as a cross from the left is almost turned into his own net by Rose. However, the ball flicks off the defender and goes behind for a goal kick. The Tigers have put in some really good crosses today and will be expected to keep asking questions of Spurs from wide areas.

GOAL! SPURS 1-0 HULL (CHADLI)

They've been on top since the start of the second half, but Hull find themselves a goal down thanks to a cool finish from Nacer Chadli. Lamela threads a wonderful ball through to his teammate, who rolls off the shoulder of the last defender before rounding Harper and slotting in. That was a close call in terms of the Belgian possibly being offside, though it looked to be the right decision. What a cruel blow for Hull.

YELLOW CARD! No complaints there as Bentaleb gets himself a caution after chopping down Brady.

SPURS SUB: The hosts make their first change of the match as Eriksen is replaced by Moussa Dembele. The game has become a bit scrappy in the last few minutes, with both sides struggling to keep possession.

YELLOW CARD! Another booking now as Rose gets his name in the referee's notebook for a reckless challenge on Huddlestone.

GOAL! SPURS 2-0 HULL (ROSE)

A minute after being booked, Danny Rose finds the net to give Spurs a comfortable 2-0 lead! The full-back exchanges passes with Mason on the edge of the box before getting in behind the Hull defender and firing past Harper. Credit must go to Mason because his ball to Rose was superbly executed. Meanwhile, Abel Hernandez has replaced Jelavic for Hull.

Tottenham have looked like a totally different side since taking the lead. They're now playing with much more freedom and are giving the Hull defence a torrid time. As for the Tigers, it's all hands to the pump for Steve Bruce's men.

Half an opening for Hull as Huddlestone's cross is met by McShane, but the defender's flicked header goes over the bar. The away side are trying desperately to pull a goal back. If they can get one in the next few minutes, they may well fancy their chances of taking something from this game.

CHANCES! How have Hull not pulled one back?! The ball drops to Hernandez inside a crowded box, but his effort from close-range is kept out by Lloris. N'Doye is in there for the rebound, only for his effort to be blocked on the line before Spurs clear.

HULL SUB: The visitors shake things up now as Andrew Robertson replaces Huddlestone.

Hull are pushing more and more men forward now as they go in search of a lifeline. Robertson receives the ball down the left before teeing up Quinn, whose low drive is held by Lloris. The visitors aren't giving up just yet.

A great passing move from Hull comes to a disappointing end when N'Doye lashes a wild effort over the crossbar from the edge of the penalty area. The forward needed to show more composure there instead of snatching at the ball. Time is running out for the Tigers. Just under 15 minutes left to play at White Hart Lane.

SPURS SUB: Another swap for Tottenham now as Mason is replaced by Benjamin Stambouli.

It's the visitors who are continuing to do most of the attacking work, though they're taking a more direct approach now. This is probably a sign of things to come in terms of the final few minutes of this match. Hull can't afford to be pretty now.

Tottenham quickly turn defence into attack as a long ball is pumped upfield towards Kane. The England international shows quick feet to chase it down, but Harper shows good awareness to race off his line and clear. This is looking like a lost cause for Hull.

CHANCE! Kane almost makes it 3-0 as he gets in some space behind the Hull defence, but the striker's low effort is saved by Harper. He did some damage there as he struck the ball, but it looks as if he'll be okay.

SPURS SUB: Kane is allowed to say goodbye to the Spurs fans for the final time this season as he is brought off for Roberto Soldado. Kane's withdrawal is more about the fans showing their appreciation for him rather than the knock that he received earlier.

There will be THREE MINUTES of added time...

YELLOW CARD! David Meyler gets a booking after clashing with Danny Rose. The Spurs defender is lucky not to pick up a second booking himself after chopping down the Hull man in the first place.

FULL TIME: SPURS 2-0 HULL

Anthony Taylor blows the full-time whistle and it's Spurs who come away with the points thanks to a 2-0 win. Mauricio Pochettino's side remain on course for Europa League qualification, but it's a different story for Hull. Steve Bruce's men must beat Manchester United next weekend if they want to give themselves a chance of staying up. A victory over the Red Devils might not even be enough to keep them up.

That's all from our live text coverage of this afternoon's match, but don't forget that you can keep up to date with all of the reaction from both camps here on Sports Mole. Thanks for your company, we hope to see you again soon. Goodbye!
