Dele Alli: Tottenham Hotspur "not ruthless enough" to beat AS Monaco

Dele Alli confesses that Tottenham Hotspur were "punished" by AS Monaco for their slow start, with a two-goal first-half deficit too much to overturn at Wembley Stadium.

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Dele Alli has admitted that he and his teammates have only themselves to blame following their disappointing 2-1 defeat to AS Monaco in the Champions League.

The Lilywhites were unable to mark their return to Europe's showpiece competition with a victory, as a slow start to the match saw them fall two goals behind inside the opening 31 minutes at Wembley Stadium.

Despite playing in front of a record home crowd for an English club in the competition, with European home games being staged at the national stadium due to a reduced capacity at their own White Hart Lane ground, Spurs were unable to take their chances when they arrived while Monaco scored from their only two shots on target.

A disappointed Alli, speaking to BT Sport after the match, acknowledged that his side require a quick response when they turn attention back to Premier League action this coming weekend.

"We started poorly and they punished us for it," he said. "We did enough to win the game but we didn't take our chances. Monaco are a good team but we weren't ruthless enough.

"The fans came out in numbers and never stopped singing. We need to pick ourselves up and win the next game."

Spurs face Sunderland and Middlesbrough in the Premier League, as well as Gillingham in the EFL Cup, before travelling to CSKA Moscow for their next European match.
