Ronald Koeman backs Eljero Elia for big impact

Ronald Koeman says that on-loan Eljero Elia will have a big impact for Southampton over the next five months.

Southampton manager Ronald Koeman has backed new signing Eljero Elia to prove himself a hit with the Saints for the duration of his loan spell.

The Dutchman, on loan from Werder Bremen, made his Premier League debut as he played 63 minutes of Sunday's 1-0 victory at Manchester United.

Elia had made just 10 appearances for the Bundesliga side all season, and Koeman says that the 27-year-old will gradually improve as his fitness increases.

"Yeah, you know he didn't play for a long time and he's not a player for 90 minutes," he told reporters.

"He needs minutes to get the rhythm of the game. It was a good option for [the United clash], he's a fast player who can play one against one.

"I think he did well for an hour, little by little he will come back with his performance. I am sure it is a good signing for us."

Koeman's side sit third in the Premier League table.
