Jose Fonte "very pleased" with Southampton display

Southampton captain Jose Fonte says that his team were "commanding" and "superior" in Sunday's 4-2 victory over Manchester City in the Premier League.

Southampton captain Jose Fonte has said that his team were "commanding" in Sunday's 4-2 victory over Manchester City in the Premier League.

Sadio Mane scored a hat-trick as the Saints moved into seventh position in the Premier League table with an impressive result against Manuel Pellegrini's Champions League semi-finalists at St Mary's.

Fonte has said that his side were "very pleased with the performance" and also praised Mane, whose three goals added to Shane Long's 25th-minute opener on the afternoon.

"We were commanding and superior today. We are very pleased with the performance. We knew that Man City would be dangerous in the second half, but we were prepared for it," Fonte told Sky Sports News.

"The gameplan was to use the pace that we have upfront and the desire we have to chase the ball. We knew that we would have to contain the pressure, but we were very confident on the ball and fortunately Mane was on fire."

Southampton will travel to Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League next Sunday afternoon.
