Roma replace Fiorentina at top of Serie A thanks to Mohamed Salah, Gervinho goals

Roma replace Fiorentina at the top of Serie A after goals from Mohamed Salah and Gervinho cancel out a late Borja Valero finish to secure a 2-1 win.

Roma have replaced Fiorentina at the top of Serie A after goals from Mohamed Salah and Gervinho cancelled out a late Borja Valero finish to secure a 2-1 away win against Paulo Sousa's team.

Former Manchester City striker Edin Dzeko had a chance to put the visitors into the lead after just four minutes, but his attempt from outside of the box was saved by Ciprian Tatarusanu.

Roma were successful in breaking the deadlock three minutes later, however, with Chelsea loanee Salah putting the Giallorossi ahead against his former team by firing into the bottom corner of the net.

Facundo Roncaglia and Nikola Kalinic both had chances to level the game for Fiorentina in the opening 20 minutes, but blazed the ball beyond the woodwork.

Rudi Garcia's side then doubled their lead 10 minutes before the break when Gervinho used his pace on the break to get into the Fiorentina box and put the ball beyond Tatarusanu.

Fiorentina's Matias Vecino shot from outside the box as half time approached, but Arsenal loanee goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny was on hand to save and keep the score at 2-0.

The second half began quietly, with Miralem Pjanic the only player to have a chance in the opening 10 minutes as his effort from inside the box was blocked well.

Vecino fired another shot from outside the area wide with 30 minutes remaining, before Federico Bernardeschi went one-on-one with Szczesny who did well again to deny Fiorentina's opportunity to get back into the game.

Kalinic had two chances for the Viola in the last 10 minutes, but his efforts were wasted as the former Blackburn Rovers striker headed straight at Szczesny before blasting the ball over the bar.

There was more drama shortly before the final whistle when goalscorer Salah saw red after complaining about being booked for a challenge just seconds before.

Fiorentina took full advantage with a goal from former West Bromwich Albion midfielder Borja Valero in stoppage time, but it was too little, too late for Paulo Sousa's men.
