Roma victory sees Juventus win Serie A title

Juventus have won the Serie A title for a fifth successive year after Roma struck late to claim a 1-0 victory over Napoli.

Napoli went into the match knowing that only three points would do if they were to prevent Juventus from being crowned champions, but an 89th-minute strike from Radja Nainggolan ended their title dreams for another 12 months.

The visitors had almost fallen a goal behind in the first minute but Mohamed Salah could only send a shot marginally wide of the target from a promising position.

Chances were few and far between for the remainder of the opening quarter although Napoli's Dries Mertens nearly capped a fine individual run with a shot to the right corner but Wojciech Szczesny was on hand to make a terrific save.

Szczesny again had to be alert to prevent a Gonzalo Higuain effort finding the back of the net before Marek Hamsik ended the first half by firing a shot high over the crossbar.

Hamsik was in the thick of the action after the restart as he was thwarted by Szczesny, who did brilliantly to keep out a shot that looked on its way to the far corner. The game remained competitive but the best chances were being created by the visitors and Mertens should have at least hit the target after being found inside the penalty area.

The pressure continued to come from Napoli and Higuain was the next player to be denied when he saw an effort blocked when reacting fastest to the ball going loose inside the 18-yard box.

However, moments after Maicon and Salah went close for the home side, Nainggolan curled the ball into the bottom corner from 18 yards to end Napoli's title ambitions and leave his side just two points behind their opponents in the race for second place.
