Roma knock Shakhtar Donetsk out of the Champions League on away goals thanks to Tuesday night's 1-0 win at the Stadio Olimpico.

Roma have progressed to the quarter-finals of the Champions League thanks to a 1-0 win over Shakhtar Donetsk in their last-16 second leg at the Stadio Olimpico.

The Ukrainian giants, who led 2-1 from the first leg, began brightly as they enjoyed the lion's share of possession in the early stages and earned several corners in quick succession.

Roma's first chance of the game came on 25 minutes as Aleksandar Kolarov played a low ball from the byline into the path of Edin Dzeko, but Andriy Pyatov saved at the Bosnian's feet.

Taison then rifled over the bar from range for the visitors, while at the other end, Kolarov overhit a cross beyond the reach of Cengiz Under.

The Serie A giants did not look comfortable for large periods of the first half and made several errors, though Facundo Ferreyra was unable to make the most of a Federico Fazio error.

Neither side could find the breakthrough by half time, but the Giallorossi went on to take the lead not long after the restart when Dzeko sprung the offside trap to latch on to a Kevin Strootman through-ball.

Pyatov mistimed his rush off the line, leaving the former Manchester City marksman to get beyond the Shakhtar keeper and calmly prod the ball into an empty net to put Roma in pole position for progress.

Paulo Fonseca's charges were left reeling and could not conjure up a response, suffering a further blow on 79 minutes when Ivan Ordets was shown a red card for tugging on Dzeko's shirt.

Moments later, a fracas broke out on the pitch after two Shakhtar players pushed a ballboy over the advertising boards for holding on to the ball in a chaotic finish to the match.

Roma were subsequently able to see the game out for an aggregate score of 2-2, which saw them through to the quarter-finals thanks to Under's away goal in the first leg.
