Richard Dunne announces Republic of Ireland retirement

QPR defender Richard Dunne calls time on his 14-year career with the Republic of Ireland.

Queens Park Rangers and Republic of Ireland defender Richard Dunne has announced his retirement from international football.

The 34-year-old earned 80 caps throughout a 14-year spell with the Boys in Green but will now support them as a fan as Martin O'Neill's charges gear up for their Euro 2016 qualifying campaign.

"I have represented Ireland since I was 15 years of age, and have thoroughly enjoyed all the highs and lows that have come with playing for my country," he told QPR's official site.

"I will continue to support the team as they embark upon their new campaign under Martin O'Neill, and have every faith that they will qualify for France 2016.

"I'd like to thank everyone I worked alongside during my time with Ireland, from managers, to players, to backroom staff. I have so many great memories that will stay with me forever."

Dunne, who helped the London club back to the Premier League last season, made his Ireland debut against Greece in 2000.
