Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho has claimed that any team from across Europe would have to settle for third place if they played in La Liga.

Mourinho thinks that the consistency shown by Madrid and Barcelona could not be matched by the continent's biggest clubs over the course of a season.

He told ESPN: "What I used to say is that every club in the world who goes to the Spanish league would finish third.

"Man City goes there, Manchester United goes there, Chelsea goes there. Who else? They finish third because the two best teams in the world are in the same league, so of course to the others, it is a big difference."

Mourinho led Madrid to the Spanish title in his second season in charge, amassing a record number of points in the process.
