Luka Modric: 'Champions League trophy belongs to Real Madrid'

Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric declares his pride at having helped the club to their 11th Champions League title.

Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric has expressed his pride at his side's performance during their Champions League final victory over Atletico Madrid this evening.

Sergio Ramos opened the scoring after just 15 minutes at the San Siro, but Yannick Ferreira Carrasco's equaliser in the 79th minute ensured that the match would go to extra time, just as it did when the two sides met in the 2014 final.

This time it went all the way to penalties, though, and Cristiano Ronaldo scored the decisive spot kick to clinch Madrid's 11th European Cup.

"We won it again but it was a hard game from the beginning to the end. It was difficult tonight because of so much humidity but we fight until the end and we made it," Modric told BT Sport.

"We are very happy and proud, we were calm on penalties and we deserved to win. I feel sorry for Atletico but I am glad for ourselves. This is the competition of Real Madrid, the 'undecima', this trophy belongs to Real and that is why it is the best club in the world.

"Manager Zinedine Zidane said it was about the mentality and we had to believe we could achieve the victory."

Modric created five chances during the final, more than any other player on the pitch.
