Hello, and welcome to Sports Mole's live text commentary of the 2014 Champions League final between Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid from the Estadio da Luz in Lisbon, Portugal!

What a fantastic evening we have ahead of us. The two sides from the Spanish capital, who have a fierce and intense rivalry, will do battle and one of them will be crowned as the champions of Europe tonight!

Atletico Madrid are the golden boys of European football at the moment. Diego Simeone's side broke the Real Madrid and Barcelona duopoly of La Liga by lifting the title last weekend. Not only did they wrestle Spain's biggest prize away from Barcelona, but they did it by battling to a superb 1-1 draw at the Nou Camp on the final day of the season!

However, Real Madrid will be hungry for success. Los Blancos have waited 12 years since their last Champions League final appearance. If they win tonight, they will win their 10th European crown and claim 'La Decima'.

With just an hour and a half until kickoff, the Real Madrid team have already arrived at the stadium. Following them into the Estadio da Luz is the Atletico team bus. But of those on the buses, who will be starting the biggest game in club football?

Both sides have a number of injury concerns...

Let's start with Real Madrid, who have major doubts over the fitness of both Pepe and Karim Benzema. Cristiano Ronaldo has also been in and out of the starting XI in recent weeks. In fact, the 2014 Ballon d'Or winner pulled out of his side's 3-1 victory over Espanyol in the warm-up last weekend. However, he is expected to be fit. Xabi Alonso will definitely be missing though, after picking up a booking in the second leg of their semi-final.

Meanwhile, the talk all week over at Atleti has revolved around Diego Costa. Their top goalscorer was substituted in the early stages of last weekend's 1-1 draw at Barcelona and the 'Will he? Won't he?' saga has been in full flight all week. One thing is for sure, it will be touch and go as to whether he takes the field tonight. Arda Turan is also a doubt after similarly leaving the Nou Camp pitch last Saturday.

As always, we will bring you the official team news as soon as they are released.

These two sides have been ruthless in the Champions League this season. Atletico Madrid are yet to lose a game in the 2013-14 competition, while Real Madrid's only loss came in the quarter-final second leg against Borussia Dortmund. Despite going down 2-0 in the Westfalenstadion, they progressed to the next round 3-2 on aggregate.

Real went on the destroy last year's winners, Bayern Munich in the semi-final. The first leg at the Bernabeu finished in a 1-0 triumph, but it was in the second leg that Carlo Ancelotti's side really blew the Germans away. Two goals apiece for Sergio Ramos and Ronaldo saw Los Blancos record a 4-0 victory, meaning the tie ended 5-0 on aggregate.

Meanwhile, Atletico overcame Chelsea to reach only their second ever European Cup final. The first leg was a drab 0-0 draw at the Vicente Calderon, but the second leg saw the tie come to life. Former Atleti captain Fernando Torres gave Chelsea the lead, but the visitors responded through Adrian, Costa and Turan to win 3-1.

So there we are. Cristiano Ronaldo does indeed start for Real. As does Karim Benzema, but Pepe is only fit enough for the bench. Raphael Varane starts at centre back alongside Sergio Ramos. More big news for Real is the inclusion of Sami Khedira, who has missed a large chunk of the season with injury.

And Diego Costa starts for Atleti! The game has come too soon for Arda Turan, though.

You've got to feel for Arda Turan, but everyone is surely happy that Karim Benzema, Cristiano Ronaldo and Diego Costa are all starting. The trio all have the ability to change a game in an instance. It could take just a moment of magic from one of them to win the game.

So now that we know the teams, who are the favourites?

Atleti midfielder Mario Suarez has said that Real Madrid are favourites for tonight, but Diego Simeone's side have only won one of four encounters against their Madrid rivals this season.

It really is remarkable how far Diego Simeone has taken Atletico Madrid. When he took over in December 2011, they were languishing in 10th place and had just been defeated by Second Division B side Albacete in the Copa del Rey. In little more than three years, he has won the Europa League, brought the La Liga title to the club, and is now on the brink of winning the club's first ever European Cup. And all on a shoestring budget.

In fact, Simeone's feats have prompted Jamie Carragher to suggest it would be the greatest ever managerial achievement were he were to lift the Champions League tonight.

However, if Carlo Ancelotti leads Real Madrid to the title tonight, not only will he get his hands on the much craved after 'La Decima', but he will become only the second man to win the European Cup three times as a manager. The only person to currently have such an accolade is the former Liverpool great, Bob Paisley.

Real Madrid's suspended midfielder, Xabi Alonso, has just popped into the Sky Sports News studio, and he has said that Cristiano Ronaldo is "100% fit".

Diego Costa has registered eight goals in the Champions League this season, which is the highest total of any player in a debut season in the competition. However, he has to go some way to catch Cristiano Ronaldo. Real's No. 7 has scored a breathtaking 16 goals already against European opposition this year.

Real and Atletico have already faced off four times this season. The first meeting came at the Bernabeu on September 29, 2013, where Diego Costa scored the only goal of the game in a 1-0 win. Then the sides were drawn against each other in the Copa del Rey. Real Madrid won 5-0 on aggregate, but as the season drew to a close, Real Madrid managed a 2-2 draw at the Vicente Calderon on March 2.

Importantly, though, Iker Casillas - who starts tonight - was not present in either of the La Liga games. In fact, in the Spaniard's illustrious career, he has never lost to Atleti in a game in which he's started.

But Atletico have already broken a hoodoo in recent months. Prior to 2013, Simeone's side had not beaten their city rivals in an astonishing 14 years - an unwanted record that began in the last millennium (1999)!

Just over ten minutes until kickoff, which means it's time for predictions...

Sports Mole reporter Dan Lewis has gone for a 1-0 victory for Real Madrid tonight. He may be worth listening to, as he predicted QPR would win the Championship playoff final just seconds before Bobby Zamora netted the winner this afternoon!

I also think it's going to be a tight affair. However, I reckon Atleti can cap off a remarkable season with a win tonight. I'm going to go with a 1-0 Atletico Madrid win and I fancy Raul Garcia to get the only goal.

The teams are in the tunnel!

And out they come onto the pitch! The Estadio da Luz is a collage of red and white, with speckles of blue dotted around the stadium.

We're set for a cracker of a final here! The first time ever that two teams from the same city have faced each other in a Champions League final, and kickoff is just seconds away!

KICKOFF: Real Madrid get us underway, a couple of minutes later than scheduled.

Real are straight on the attack down the left wing. Dani Carvajal has got forward a couple of times already.

The first foul of the game is given against Real Madrid, and Atleti have a chance to get their foot on the ball for the first time in the game, but they give it straight away.

Miranda is then penalised for a late foul on Cristiano Ronaldo. The centre-back led with his arm as he challenged for a header.

Fabio Coentrao tries to wriggle free through the centre of the pitch, but he is squeezed out of it by two defenders. A good early tempo to the game here, but we're still waiting for our first shot.

Ooooh! Karim Benzema flicks the ball around the corner with his back to goal 18 yards out, but his touch is a little too heavy for Gareth Bale and Thibaut Courtois gathers.

Raul Garcia's floated free kick causes a few issues for Real Madrid, but they eventually clear the ball and win a goal kick off the boot of Diego Costa.

SUBSITUTION: Diego Costa has left the pitch already! Just nine minutes into the final, Adrian comes on for Atleti's top goalscorer this season. It was a massive risk to start him, and it has backfired massively.

You wonder how that will impact Atleti. They got a result last weekend when he went off at the Nou Camp, but to go one better and win without the man who's scored 36 goals this season will be some feat.

Raul Garcia is the next player to go in late on Cristiano Ronaldo. The midfielder then blocks off Fabio Coentrao, but no free kick is given for the second offence.

Angel di Maria whips in a cross from the left flank, but it sails out for a goal kick.

Raul Garcia has the first shot of the game, but in truth it was nothing more than speculative. His drive from more than 30 yards flies high and wide of Iker Casillas's goal.

Gabi floats a first-time volley through for Adrian, but it has just a little too much on it and Iker Casillas sweeps up. That was nearly a very good chance for the substitute.

HANDBAGS! Gabi and Fabio Coentrao square up after a late challenge by the Portuguese left-back. There was nothing in it really, but these affairs are always highly charged. I'm sure that won't be the last time the officials have to step in to separate the sides...

Real Madrid get their foot on the ball again, but Sami Khedira sends a wayward cross over the head of everyone. The final ball from both sides has been very poor so far.

Atletico regain possession but go all the way back to Thibaut Courtois and slow the game down once more.

But Real come again down the right flank. Dani Carvajal finds himself in a good crossing position, but his floated pass comes off the head of Felipe Luis and Thibaut Courtois gathers with ease.

A free kick for Real Madrid, but they are angry that an advantage wasn't played. Angel di Maria was tripped, but Fabio Coentrao took over and dashed into the box. However, the referee had already blown his whistle. Luka Modric is over the ball...

... but it's a poor delivery and Thibaut Courtois holds onto the ball.

Real Madrid counter and Gareth Bale tries to bring down a high ball, but a posse of Atleti players swarm around him and nick the ball away from the Welshman.

Tiago marauds forward before shifting the ball out wide to Adrian. The substitute whips a cross towards the far post, and Sergio Ramos slices the clearance over his own bar. Raphael Varane leaps highest to head the ball away.

BOOKING! Raul Garcia is the first player to enter the book for a shocking hack on Angel di Maria, who had run 60 yards with the ball and was advancing on the Atleti goal. Sergio Ramos also entered the book for racing up to Garcia and provoking his opponent.

Cristiano Ronaldo stands over the free kick and sends it towards goal in that familiar fashion of his. Thibaut Courtois watches it all the way though, and makes a save from the first shot on target of the game.

Koke has just given away two fouls, and the Real fans are calling for him to be booked aswell. The winger has a clean slate so far though.

Half an hour into the game, and the only real moment of excitement came when Angel di Maria was cynically brought down by Raul Garcia a few minutes ago.

CHANCE! Gareth Bale intercepts a shocking Tiago pass and sets off towards goal. He runs at the heart of the Atletico defence and the chance opens up for him, but from just 12 yards out, and on his favoured left side, Bale pokes his shot wide of the far post! A glorious opportunity for the Welshman to make himself a hero, but he's fluffed it!

Well, well, well. Gareth Bale has missed an absolute sitter there. Real certainly in the ascendancy now.

A corner to Atletico, as Adrian forces Raphael Varane to clear.

What a howler by Iker Casillas! The initial corner is cleared, but a header is looped back into the area. Casillas thinks he can make it and starts the charge from his goalline. When he realises that he won't actually reach the ball, it's too late, because Diego Godin cranes his neck to flick a header towards goal. Casillas dashes back and desperately tries to claw the ball away, but replays show that it crossed the line!

A real sucker punch for Real, that. Casillas is so, so experienced, but that was an atrocious error of judgement. Not that Atleti care!

Another dangerous ball into the box forces Sergio Ramos to clear behind again. Can Real deal with this corner?

CHANCE! The answer is no! Adrian rises above his marker at the near post and sends a header narrowly over the bar from eight yards. He should have done better! I wonder how Diego Costa would have fared in the same position...

Atletico have been dominant since scoring the opener. Can they get another before half time?

Real Madrid have a corner, with half time just seconds away.

Atletico clear Angel di Maria's corner though, and Dani Carvajal then runs the ball out of play.

BOOKING! David Villa is brought down by Sami Khedira as he nimbly changes direction. The challenge prompts the referee to book the German.

It's Diego Godin with the goal that separates the two sides at the break. In all honesty, that 45 minutes wasn't the best I've seen all season, but it's been enticing nonetheless. Gareth Bale had a glorious opportunity to put Real ahead before Godin's opener, but the blame lies solely with Iker Casillas. An awful piece of goalkeeping by the 33-year-old stopper.

Elsewhere today, QPR won promotion back to the Premier League with a 1-0 Championship playoff final win over Derby County, while Toulon have won the Heineken Cup final by beating Saracens 23-6 in Jonny Wilkinson's last game on British soil.

KICKOFF: We're back underway!

Luke Modric is brought down by Gabi, but Angel di Maria's poor free kick is headed clear.

Gareth Bale collects the ball and cuts inside, but Felipe Luis comes charging in and dispossesses him with a perfectly-timed sliding challenge.

The hunger and desire of this Atleti team is remarkable. Three forwards close Fabio Coentrao down and block his clearance. It's gone out for a Real throw, but it's stopped them playing out from the back.

Koke squirms away down the left flank and pings a cross-field ball to Raul Garcia. The Spaniard lines up an ambitious volley with his weak foot from 25 yards that sails high and wide. Highly ambitious, but incredible work rate and quick feet from the leaders.

BOOKING! Miranda is shown a yellow card for hauling down Angel di Maria. The Argentinian has been Real's best player so far. He really drives at the Atletico defence when the ball is at his feet. Cristiano Ronaldo has placed the ball on the Lisbon turf and is preparing to take the 25-yard free kick.

CLOSE! The free kick kicks up off the wall and it's an awkward one for Thibaut Courtois, who parries it over the bar. From the corner, Ronaldo can't quite control the ball and it's poked behind by Tiago. The next corner sees Sergio Ramos head wide of the far post. Much better from Real Madrid.

Dani Carvajal breathes a huge sigh of relief. He goes to barge Adrian out of the way as the forward ran down the left wing. The Atleti forward simply sidestepped him though, but Carvajal got back to tackle the striker.

A ball into the box is blocked, but it only falls at the feet of Adrian. The striker has to take it quickly as it rises. He manages a decent effort at goal, but it's deflected behind for another Atleti corner.

SUBSTITUTIONS: Fabio Coentrao and Sami Khedira have departed the pitch to be replaced by Marcelo and Isco.

Atletico come forward again. The ball is nicked off the feet of Luka Modric and the red-and-white-striped shirts come streaming forward once more.

When Atletico go forward, they leave themselves open for a counter attack. Angel di Maria picks the ball up once more for Los Blancos and nearly picks out Cristiano Ronaldo with a raking pass.

CLOSE! Cristiano Ronaldo can't quite stretch his neck enough to connect with Sergio Ramos's inswinging cross from the left wing. He was agonisingly close to thumping a header into the back of the net.

Cristiano Ronaldo does get his head onto Koke's corner to clear though.

SUBSTITUTION: Raul Garcia takes the applause of the Atletico fans as he leaves the pitch. The midfielder has put a very good shift in. Jose Sosa enters the pitch with 25 minutes remaining.

CHANCE! Cristiano Ronaldo works the ball into the feet of Karim Benzema in the box. The French striker has his back towards goal and lays it off to Isco, but the substitute drags his 20-yard shot wide.

They're getting closer! Angel di Maria and Marcelo exchange passes on the edge of the box, but when the ball comes back to the Argentinian, his second touch is too heavy and Felipe Luis hacks it clear.

Marcelo gets the ball again on the left wing and he picks out Gareth Bale with a cross. However, the former Spurs winger handles the ball and Atleti are allowed a breather. They have less than 20 minutes to hold on.

OUCH! Jose Sosa breaks down the right wing and sends a skidding cross into the box. Iker Casillas comes flying out and collects it and David Villa goes with his studs. The Spanish striker is given a booking for the challenge.

CLOSE! It's Gareth Bale again! Luka Modric tees the winger up and he collects it on his left foot as he steps inside, but once more the finishing touch is lacking. From 18 yards, the Welsh winger skews his shot wide!

Cristiano Ronaldo follows up shortly after with an acrobatic effort, but he slices it off his shin and it flies high over the bar. If the final 15 minutes or so stay like this, it will be incredibly nervy for Atletico.

Karim Benzema is penalised for a pushing Diego Godin in the back as he heads yet another Real Madrid cross clear.

CHANCE! Would you believe it - it's Gareth Bale again! And it's another glorious chance! He leaves Felipe Luis for dead as he cuts inside his marker with a burst of pace. He strides towards goal and it seems as though this will be the moment for him, but he goes to poke the ball into the far corner and scuffs a tame effort wide of the near post. How many more chances will they get?!

Adrian, Atletico's forward, is back inside his own box as he hacks a ball clear to the halfway line. Real Madrid collect the ball again and come forward in another wave of attack. Can Diego Simeone's side hold on?

Alvaro Morata steps across the back of the Atleti captain, Gabi. He goes down writhing in agony, but there was barely any contact. He's just buying his side some time. Now Felipe Luis is down...

SUBSTITUTION: Felipe Luis cannot continue, and Toby Alderweireld - who usually plays as a central defender - comes on in his place.

CLOSE! Angel di Maria slides a sumptuous low cross across the face of the six-yard box, but no-one is there to apply the finishing touch!

CLEARANCE! Cristano Ronaldo nods a deep cross back across the face of goal, and Marcelo looks as though he's going to apply the finishing touch. But out of nowhere, Juanfran flies in and thwacks the ball away. A wonderful piece of defending by the right-back!

BOOKING: Koke is the next Atleti player to be booked.

A foul is given against Alvaro Morata for backing into Diego Godin. Three minutes remain.

Incredible industry by Jose Sosa, who dispossesses Gareth Bale, sidesteps two players and then wins a foul for his side. Amazing energy. Another foul further up the pitch has presented Sosa with the chance to put this game to bed, but the free kick is tame.

Atleti will have to survive another five minutes of this torture! Can they hold on?

Would you believe it!? Sergio Ramos heads Real Madrid level with just over a minute remaining! The defender peels away from his marker and plants a powerful header right into the bottom corner from Luka Modric's outswinging corner. My word, this is unbelievable!

Atleti have a throw-in deep in Real's half. Can they make anything of it?

We're going to have 30 more minutes of drama! Sergio Ramos's late, late equaliser means the game will go into extra time is Lisbon.

You do wonder how Atleti will recover from that. They chased and harried and hassled Real for more than 45 minutes in that second half, but with just over 60 seconds remaining, they were pegged back. Can Diego Simeone muster one more miracle from his troops?

KICKOFF: Extra time gets underway in the Estadio da Luz.

While the Atleti fans have been the most vocal for most of the evening, it's the Real fans who are in full voice now as they jump up and down in the stands, swinging their scarves above their heads.

Cristiano Ronaldo gives the ball away again. The Champions League top goalscorer for the season (16 goals) has been below par tonight by his very high standards. It makes you wonder whether he really is fully fit.

Gareth Bale is the next Real player to make a mistake. Angel di Maria's ball inside bounces off his foot and Miranda snaps in the take the ball off the winger.

Juanfran is down after a challenge with Alvaro Morata. He looks in quite a bit of discomfort, but is back on his feet.

It's all Real Madrid at the moment. They are camped on the edge of Atletico's box. The problem for Diego Simeone's men is that they are all exhausted. Whenever they win the ball back, they can't hold onto it.

Cristiano Ronaldo gives them a bit of a breather with a scuffed shot from almost 40 yards that bobbles behind for a goal kick.

Marcelo skips away down the left wing and pings a cross into the area, but Atletico get to the loose ball quickly and clear once more. But here come Real again....

Gareth Bale comes close to leaving Toby Alderweireld in his wake, but his touch is just too heavy and it runs behind for a goal kick.

BOOKING: Gabi goes into the book for a mistimed sliding challenge on Marcelo. Cristiano Ronaldo is standing over another free kick in a dangerous area.

Gabi makes amends by deflecting the free kick behind for a corner.

Atletico manage to win themselves a throw-in deep in Real Madrid's half. Toby Alderweireld's long throw into the box is cleared by Raphael Varane.

Dani Carvajal has a loose touch and Atletico now have a corner. Can they make it count?

The answer is no. Jose Sosa's corner is cleared at the near post. That was a rare chance to test Casillas and it was wasted.

Cristiano Ronaldo hurdles a challenge by Tiago and goes down. The referee awards a free kick, but there was no contact.

Real Madrid have a corner. They'll need to be quick to take it before the whistle. And they are. Ramos nods an effort towards goal and Gareth Bale comes close to getting a crucial toe on it, but Thibaut Courtois comes to claim the ball.

Diego Simeone charges onto the pitch to confront the referee as the whistle blows. He is furious tat five minutes were added on in normal time, and that another minute was added to the first half of extra time. Both teams are now gathered in a huddle as they look to muster that extra ounce of energy that could win them the 2014 Champions League final.

KICKOFF: The second period of extra time is underway.

These two teams have just 15 more minutes to find a goal before we head to a penalty shootout.

Marcelo seems to be Real Madrid's go-to man. His fresh legs have seen him ghost past players since his introduction.

Luka Modric snaffles the ball off Koke and heads towards goal, but his 25-yard effort deflects up off the back of Miranda and into the hands of Thibaut Courtois.

CHANCE! Diego Godin gets his head to another set piece! It was a difficult chance, but when he heads it down into the turf, all the pace is taken out of the header and Casillas easily catches it.

He's done it! Gareth Bale nets what looks as though is going to be the winner. Angel di Maria picked the ball up just inside Atleti's half and drove at two defenders. He got lucky when Juanfran's tackle bounced back off his shin and into his path. The Argentinian tried to bend a shot towards the far corner. Although Thibaut Courtois made a great save, Bale leaped into the air and headed the ball into an empty net! What a fairytale moment for Bale!

CHANCE! Iker Casillas drops another clanger! He comes to claim a high, floated ball into the box and can't get there (sound familiar?). The loose ball drops to the feet of Tiago at the far post, but he has to take the chance quickly and he ends up slicing his bouncing effort over the bar. Was that the chance for Atleti?

Angel di Maria works the ball to an unmarked Cristiano Ronaldo as Atletico were stretched, but when he shifted it onto his favoured right foot, he slipped at the crucial moment!

Marcelo has sealed it for Real Madrid! La Decima is finally on its way to the Bernabeu! The left-back picked the ball up 30 yards out, but when no-one closed him down, he strode forward and powered a low shot into the far corner!

Cristiano Ronaldo is brought down by Juanfran, who is shown a red card, and Ronaldo has the chance to get himself a Champions League final goal on Portuguese soil.

Cristiano Ronaldo gets his goal! He's been very poor tonight, but he sends Thibaut Courtois the wrong way from the spot and that really is the icing on the cake for Real Madrid!

RED CARD! Confirmation of the red card for Juanfran.

Diego Simeone has come charging onto the pitch as Real Madrid celebrate their fourth goal. The Atleti manager was obviously riled by something, but it's game over now.

REAL MADRID ARE THE 2014 CHAMPIONS LEAGUE WINNERS! After 120 minutes of football, Real Madrid have prevailed as winners. And to think, they were losing 1-0 in the 93rd minute...

Atletico Madrid have made their way up the steps to collect their runners-up medals. Let's not forget what an incredible season they've had. The La Liga champions have been imperious all season. They were second best tonight, but even reaching the final was a remarkable feat.

And now it's the turn of Real Madrid, who are the champions of Europe for the first time since 2002.

The whole Real Madrid team are beaming from ear to ear. The Champions League is the trophy that they've desperately chased for over a decade now. They've spent over $1bn since they last won it, and they now have their hands on it once again.

The Real Madrid team are still out on the pitch, taking in the adulation of all their fans who've stayed behind to pay tribute to their side. They showed incredible spirit to come back from a goal down in stoppage time.

This night will live long in the memory of every Real Madrid player, but none more so than Gareth Bale. The world's most expensive player missed three glorious chances before scoring the crucial second goal for Real Madrid. In his first season in Spain, he has scored in the Copa del Rey final and the Champions League final. It's gone some way to paying back his £86m transfer fee, that's for sure.
