PSV vs Go Ahead Eagles - prediction, team news, lineups

The new football season over in the Netherlands is about to begin as PSV Eindhoven take on Go Ahead Eagles for the Johan Cruyff Shield this Sunday.

No team has won more Dutch Super Cups than PSV, who will be looking for their 15th crown when they take on last year’s KNVB Cup victors.

Match preview

The 2025 calendar year has been a rollercoaster ride for PSV, with the club experiencing major lows as well as unbelievable highs.

The start of the year was particularly tough, with the Eindhoven outfit winning just one of their first seven league matches in 2025 – a run which saw Ajax Amsterdam leapfrog them into top spot in the Eredivisie.

Defeat in the KNVB Cup semi-final against the Go Ahead Eagles took place at around the same time, as did their embarrassing 7-1 defeat to Arsenal in the Champions League.

Peter Bosz and his men survived the storm, and by late spring they were once again picking up serious momentum, which made for a thrilling season finale.

PSV, who thought they blew their title ambitions during the winter months, won their last seven league games and miraculously overtook Ajax in the penultimate round of the campaign after the Amsterdam side endured a complete season collapse.

The Farmers will now be looking to kick off the new season by claiming the Dutch Super Cup for the 15th time. This will be the seventh straight season in which PSV compete for the Johan Cruyff Shield, with the Eindhoven side winning the trophy in three of their last four years.

For the Go Ahead Eagles, this will be their first crack at the Super Cup, having earned their way to the fixture by winning the KNVB Cup for the very first time.

The Eagles are not known for their title winning pedigree, with the club previously lifting silverware back in 1959. Nevertheless, Sunday will give the club a rare opportunity to claim their second trophy in a space of five months.

Manager Paul Simonis, who masterminded the cup final win over AZ Alkmaar in April, will not be there to make more history with the club after securing a job with VfL Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga.

Dutchman Melvin Boel has been drafted in by the Eagles and will have an opportunity to mark his first official match in charge with a trophy win.

Despite the managerial change, Go Ahead Eagles will be buoyed by their recent record against PSV, which consists of back-to-back victories.

Team News

PSV have been boosted by the return of Ricardo Pepi, who is back to full fitness after overcoming a knee injury.

Pepi marked his return to action by scoring a brace in a 3-2 friendly victory over city rivals FC Eindhoven.

Jerdy Schouten has also recovered from a knee injury and will be looking to impress after taking over captain duties from Luuk de Jong.

There are a couple of injury doubts ahead of Sunday, with Ismael Saibari and Matej Kovar potentially needing more time before returning to action.

Go Ahead Eagles will be without defender Gerrit Nauber, who is suspended for the Super Cup clash in Eindhoven.

Jakob Breum, Luca Everink, Finn Stokkers, and Soren Tengstedt are all injury doubts and may not be available for selection.

PSV Eindhoven possible starting lineup: Benitez; Ledezma, Flamingo, Boscagli, Malacia; Schouten, Saibari, Veerman; Bakayoko, De Jong, Lang

Go Ahead Eagles possible starting lineup: De Busser; Deijl, Kramer, Adelgaard, James; Llansana, Linthorst; Antman, Smit, Suray; Edvardsen

We say: PSV Eindhoven 3-1 Go Ahead Eagles

Following successive defeats to the Go Ahead Eagles, we are backing PSV to finally have some revenge in Sunday’s Super Cup showdown.
