Newcastle transfer news: Another exit imminent as Martin Dubravka officially completes move to Burnley

Another Newcastle exit imminent as Dubravka’s transfer to Burnley is confirmed

Newly-promoted Premier League side Burnley have completed the signing of goalkeeper Martin Dubravka from Newcastle United.

The 36-year-old only extended his contract with the Magpies in February, but his switch to Burnley is the latest development in a goalkeeping reshuffle at both clubs this summer.

Eddie Howe’s side were long-term admirers of James Trafford before Burnley completed the club-record sale of the highly-rated 22-year-old to Manchester City earlier this summer.

Newcastle subsequently turned their attention to Aaron Ramsdale who has joined the club on loan from Southampton with an option to buy at the end of the 2025-26 season.

Before cashing in on Trafford, Burnley signed shot-stopper Max Weiss from German second-tier outfit Karlsruhe, and the 21-year-old - along with Vaclav Hladky - are set to provide backup to Dubravka in Scott Parker’s side next season.

Dubravka, who has put pen to paper on a one-year contract at Turf Moor, will don the No.1 jersey following Trafford’s exit and could make his competitive debut for the Clarets in their opening Premier League fixture away against Tottenham Hotspur on August 16.

Dubravka “delighted” and “excited” after completing Burnley move

"I'm delighted to be here," Dubravka told Burnley’s official website. "It's a really exciting time to be joining this club, ahead of our return to the Premier League.

"I've only heard really positive things about the club, the culture and the environment we work in, so I'm excited about getting going with the season kicking off next weekend."

He added: "Burnley had a fantastic campaign last season, built on a superb defensive record, and I can't wait to come in and add my experience and quality to what looks an exciting squad of players. I'm really looking forward to playing for the club in front of our passionate fans."

Dubravka leaves Newcastle after seven-and-a-half years at St James’ Park where he made a total of 179 appearances and kept 51 clean sheets across all competitions.

The Slovakia international was a first-team regular at Newcastle before the arrival of Nick Pope in 2022, and he was loaned out to Manchester United for the first half of the 2022-23 season before returning in January of that campaign.

Dubravka remained as a backup figure under Howe, but he played a key role in last season's EFL Cup triumph, featuring four times and keeping three clean sheets including in each leg of Newcastle’s 4-0 semi-final win over Arsenal.

Vlachodimos could soon follow Dubravka out of Newcastle exit door

Dubravka’s departure from Newcastle could soon be followed by another goalkeeping exit, as i news correspondent Mark Douglas claims that Odysseas Vlachodimos is on the brink of finalising a loan move to La Liga club Sevilla.

Douglas adds that the decision to loan Vlachodimos protects the club from breaching the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules as a permanent deal would see the Magpies record a loss on the Greece international.

Vlachodimos joined Newcastle from Benfica for a reported £20m last summer, but the 31-year-old has only made one senior appearance for the club, coming on as a second-half substitute for the injured Dubravka in a 1-0 win over AFC Wimbledon in the EFL Cup third round in October 2024.

It is understood that Vlachodimos is keen to continue his career in Europe and has opted to rebuff interest from clubs in Saudi Arabia in order to complete a temporary switch to Sevilla.
