Newcastle looking to equal club-record win tally against Tottenham

Newcastle United will attempt to equal a club-record win tally when they face Tottenham Hotspur at St James' Park on Sunday.

The Magpies, who are sitting in fourth position, are preparing for a crucial game against a fellow Champions League-chasing side.

Eddie Howe's team head into Sunday's contest with a three-point cushion over Tottenham, who have played one game more than Newcastle.

A win over the North London club would move Newcastle one step closer towards Champions League qualification, and it would also equal a club record for the most Premier League wins against one opponent.

The Magpies have claimed more Premier League victories over Aston Villa (24) than they have against Tottenham, who they have beaten on 23 occasions in the competition.

Newcastle were unable to get the better of Aston Villa last weekend, as they fell to a disappointing 3-0 defeat at Villa Park.

The Magpies are now at risk of losing consecutive Premier League matches for just the second time in the 2022-23 campaign.

They can take inspiration from their previous meeting with Tottenham, which produced a 2-1 away victory thanks to strikes from Callum Wilson and Miguel Almiron.

The win in North London presents Newcastle with the opportunity to claim a league double over Spurs for the first time since the 2015-16 season.

They will go into the contest without the services of Allan Saint-Maximin, who remains sidelined with a hamstring injury.
